"Swimmer who vanished at Lovers Point was wearing a shark deterrent. What science says about what they do — and don’t do
Studies question whether wearable shark deterrents effectively reduce risk
"

They don't say much about Shark Shield (i.e., Ocean Guardian) in that article, but there is some research that IMHO is pretty strong to back up its effectiveness. Specifically, this research paper from 2013 is worth taking a look at:

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0062730

The most crucial data for kayakers is in Table 4, where they give the results of their "Dynamic Tow Experiments". That table shows that the number of breaches with Shark Shield on was 0, and "surface interactions" was 2. In contrast, using the same setup but with the Shark Shield turned off, they had 16 breaches and 27 surface interactions. The number of tests for both cases was comparable, with 98 having the SS off and 91 having it on. As far as I know, there is nothing comparable to such results for any magnet system.

Agreed.  In prep for a guest lecture on products liability last week, I reviewed Sharkbanz purported corroboration to their ad claim that its a "scientifically proven shark deterrent technology."  [clearly Sharkbanz has no in-house legal bc even a 1/3 sane lawyer would have quashed that marketing].

For performance claims such as made by Sharkbanz, Section 5 of the FTC Act requires support by way of "competent and reliable scientific evidence".  The entirety of research corroboration that they rely upon can be viewed here.

The best they have is some ishtty inferential studies, nothing close to meeting Section 5 requirements, IMO.  Then they have Bethany Hamilton as a paid spokesperson.  Oy
