What makes it mysterious?

This deep-sea anglerfish usually lurks in inky darkness half a mile below the surface. The female football fish sports a glowing lure on her head, a built-in flashlight in the deep sea’s eternal night to attract curious prey. Even stranger, the tiny males live their lives as parasitic “zombies,” fusing to the female’s body and eventually sharing her bloodstream! A haunting partnership that lasts a lifetime.

What’s even more mysterious?

Although this species is exceedingly rare, an unusual number of specimens have washed ashore along the U.S. West Coast in the past five years. Every specimen that washes up is an opportunity to further the collective global understanding of this uniquely spooky fish.

A 2025 paper in the California Fish and Game Journal investigates these recent strandings in the context of all known records to help us learn more about this mysterious deep-sea dweller. Dive into an abundance of expertly verified fun facts about here: https://journal.wildlife.ca.gov/.../recent-beach.../
