Down here for couple weeks.   Fished Mission .bay today.   One hit and good one.  Might have been Ray or big halibut.   Not a lot of head shakes, but towed the yak for couple hundred yards.   Finally sulked on bottom and trying to get it going and line broke at swim bait.   Using 10# test and spinning rod.

95% of the fish you catch in the bay are Spotted  Bay bass.   1-2#.   Maybe a 3# corbina.  Biggest halibut I caught here was maybe 12”.

rig sounds right for Mission bay, kinda like saltwater bass fishing, until you get a legal halibut - but they run pretty small in the 'false bay'.  I've had better luck in San Diego Bay, a good launch at Grace Beach near the boat launch.  Fishing is good, views are spectacular, and you can get bait from the barge about a mile toward the inlet.

Sounds like a fun trip!  I love San Diego - need to bring a kayak next time I go down there.

Hassle to get to SD Bay.   House we rent is 200 yards to Mission Bay.  And bring the Hobie inflatables.   No rack on the rav4.   Same with La Jolla.   Used to bring the Outback when I had that.

I haven't done Mission Bay or SD Bay yet. When I'm dropping the kid off or picking her up there is no room in the car for kayak stuff with all the dorm stuff. So I rent the basic sit-on-tops at La Jolla Shores. 2 places will allow me to take the dog on board. A few weeks ago I couldn't even make bait, except a lizard fish. But in the past I've made bait and got a couple Calicos.
In Mission Bay there is a place that rents a pedal kayak and they allow dogs. I might abandon dreams of yellowtail and try that next time.
