It really depends on the size of the fish and depth. The deeper you are trying to get it, and the bigger the fish, the more weight you need.

I carry multiple 1lb weights. Haven't needed more than 1lb yet, but I typically fish in less than 60' of water. Some folks carry big 3-5lb weights for this.

I think some of the fish I've descended probably would have been fine if I just let them go, but I figured a little practice on smaller fish in shallower water would be good so that I don't mess up with bigger fish in deeper water.

I used up to 3 lbs to descend a huge yelloweye.

It seems like Coppers rarely need it and Yellow Eyes always need it -even from 50’ depth. I’ve gotten away with 10 to 12 oz but with a 20” Yellow Eye it took awhile and the fish had to do its part. I don’t think I’ve ever used more than 16 oz.

If a seagull poops on you, statistically it was no accident.

Five pounds wasn't enough to descend this one.  Be prepared.

Note: this was up in Alaska last month, where retention of yelloweye is legal.

Most I’ve ever had to use is 7 lbs. on one pickle caught.  120’ and probably 15 lbs YE, we had to borrow lead from 3 yaks total to get it back down..
