Hey all, looking for suggestions / recommendations for an outdoor kayak rack, for two wide fishing kayaks.  Also need some sort of cover...

They currently live outside, one stacked on top of the other, under a heavy duty tarp. Not ideal, haha.

Eventually will remodel my garage and very likely end up hanging the kayaks from the ceiling, but for probably the next two years or so, they gotta live outside.

Thanks you your ideas!

Build a 2x6 framed rack with cover.  Similar to building my lumber rack, I basically built another for our two kayaks.  Slide in and out from the end for easy access.  Doesn’t stop spider webs and little bugs, but a quick spray off before loading fixes that.

I wanted to build a whole kayak shed, but the spot it needs to go doesn't have space to slide the kayak in from the end, so I am stuck with sliding it in from the long side, if that makes sense.  Also, it needs to not be permanent - it will cover one of our sewer clean outs, and I need to be able to slide it out of the way, just in case.

Basically, I need either an off the shelf freestanding kayak rack, or I need to build one. Fortunately, it is against a north facing wall on my house, so it doesn't really get sun.  Of course, still going to cover them, but I'd like to find something a little nicer than a tarp.

Most of the racks I've seen have arms that are only like 26" or so, not really wide enough for a 36" wide fishing kayak. I'm kinda leaning towards building something, but I know if I use lumber, it's gonna get really heavy really fast, which isn't ideal if I need to move it.

You could build a rack on heavy duty casters to roll around, if the ground is relatively flat and smooth.

If not casters, then there's ways to build the permanent rack and still have access to the sewer clean out.  Access door built into the platform or do triangular framing for the sewer clean out access.

Post a picture and I can likely give you tips on how/what to do.  I build houses for a living.

Hey Kevin, I like your idea of an access door - that certainly opens up some design options.

I still have some planning to do... Thanks for your help so far!

Thanks for the suggestion!  Not sure if the arms on that one are long enough - one of the kayaks I need to store is a Santa Cruz Raptor.  I've been looking at other off the shelf racks too, and haven't quite found the one yet.

I'm leaning more towards DIY with 2x6s like Kevin suggested.  I know some folks here have built their own kayak storage solution - anyone have pictures of their setups?

I do remember a while back someone posting a nice DIY that was made of wood. Cart style that was able to wheel around the garage. Hopefully they will chime in.

Probably no longer available but maybe a good reference for a starting point for a build.

I was gifted a nice kayak trailer from SkiPro Jerry that used a lager diameter pvc pipe to support the kayak.

I welded up one out of an old aluminum extension ladder.   Like an “E”.   Could do same with 2x4 and a couple angle braces.   Got rid of the rack when I went to inflatable Hobie.    Would be easy to weld up a steel rack from pipe.   Maybe galvanized for rusting.   Maybe slide insulation over pipe or wrap.

I second the use of PVC pipe. If you leave it loose in the middle (if that makes sense...), it'll form to the shape of the kayak.
