Go on a 3/4 day trip first.   Learn the way of fly lining live bait.   I got first one out of Seaforth.   Free parking, on the San Diego.   Mostly yellowfin tuna.  Can rent rod if don’t have.

95% of the BFT we've caught are at night on the jig.  The way of fly lining live bait is not important.  I'll maintain the only way to really learn this night time jig fishery is to jump in and do it.  It's not for everyone.  I've seen grown men cry and give up.   :smt005

Yep. Last time I went (about a year ago), we only caught them late at night where it was pretty much wide open. Rip roller jigs were the ones that were working the best. I caught my limit and stopped and helped other people who didn't have any.

I haven’t done this personally ……but it’s almost a guarantee to happen on open party trips….if you have yellow spectra the proper technique is to go to the front of the boat, just let the current rip a hundred yards of line off your reel while you aimlessly gaze off in the distance.  When someone’s eventually hooked up and has a rats next of yellow spectra tied up to their line…..and the deckhand is asking who has the yellow spectra….dont pay attention and just start tugging on the line like you have a fish.   When they start screaming to stop pulling, just pull harder. Once you cause the other anglers fish to come off…..wander into the galley and tell everyone you just had a fish on but lost it.  Be sure to give everyone else advice on how to catch em on your next trip.

Hahahah, this gave me a good laugh!  Sorry for your loss.  Yellow spectra guy hits all of us sooner or later.

If i remember correctly, there was someone who had problems with hollow core braid someone recommended to him. At least he was smart enough to replace quickly after he noticed it was requiring way more weight than everyone else.

Luckily I’ve only been a witness to yellow braid Guys antics so far lol.  It is inevitable however. I learned about it on my first open party trip a couple years back, deckhands hollering out everything I described….once the fish was gone the deckhand walked away muttering it’s always the yellow braid lol.  I’ve also learned to avoid the Angry guy, everything’s is just going wrong for this guy and his frustration just leads to more bad luck and endless venting about it.  Giant spinning reel guy, this guy shouldn’t be confused with expert spinning reel guy that’s got some purpose built spinning setup, giant spinning reel guy has 80’s model 8000 series spinning reel with that electric blue mono on it…..mono also being of 80’s vintage.  This is more of a half day boat phenomenon but the bait’n’wait guy that puts a bait in the water and leans his rod up against the rail so he can run down to the galley and order a burger.  Then when the deckhand reels in his rod and puts it in a holder cause it’s in everyone’s way….bait’n’wait Guy gets mad cause someone touched his gear.

I think I need to start an official that guy thread…..

Just borrow the gear from ex-kayaker.  There is a reason he knows all these stories ...

Clearly, the only braid to use is dark green moss so it’s invisible at night.

In the deckhand realm I think I’m more of a “who tf brought the 300lb bag of jigs” guy……when loading and unloading the boat at the docks.
