Like to know if anyone has any recommendations for places to camp overnight the night before the MBK derby?

Undecided but may consider heading to Monterrey the night before and simply sleep I the car so I”m not rushing early in the morning.

Would be nice if there is a parking lot nearby.  Don’t know if the Coast Guard launch area allows overnight parking or not.  Possible a nearby state park.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Camping at Laguna Seca on non-race days is cheap and the campgrounds are really nice. approx 20 mins to MBK

I've never camped at Laguna Seca, but I've been there for the races, and I second ppickerell's comment that it would be a nice place to camp.

Wrt sleeping in a car, I have not tried it in Monterey, but I have slept in my car a few times near the Santa Cruz harbor (and a couple other places). Most every time, it was obvious that there were other people doing the same thing, and there was never any problem. I don't know if they are as laid back in Monterey, though.

Thanks All for the recommendations.  Unclear how the police and city likes to have people sleeping in their cars so the campsites look to be the best options.

I think Laguna Seca is the most cost effective (Thanks Ppickerell).  I will need to call to check out the late entry and early departure situation if gates are closed but it looks like $9/day entry fee.

Thanks again to all

When I go diving at Point Lobos, I drive the night before and sleep and the Safeway parking lot and have never had problems. Others also sleep there, you have Safeway for a bathroom and food purchase. The bathroom at Monastery Beach is a favorite. I have also parked there a few times with my kayak on board and no problems. Check it out, it could work, Ron.
