I like Cabs too.  Nice firm texture.

They sometimes have enough worms to gross me out, but other than that they are one of my favorites.  And fun to catch too!

If anybody’s good at high level summary it’d be helpful for those of us who are easily confused

Depending on circumstances this would be the first fishing license I’ve bought in I think 6 years(?) and those regs look like a maze to me

Particularly the nearshore thing

So it looks like for the local zones as far as fishing from a kayak goes it’s May through September except maybe around the canyon

And you have to carry a descending device

Is that a DIY kind of thing or does it have to be something specific?

Yes, you have a descending device ready to use.  DIY kind is fine.

November is open for nearshore rockfish as well. There’s just something about October, though. By some mysterious circumstances, only known to DFG, the quillbacks must be vulnerable in shallow water at that time.

The quillback thing is totally not made up. The regulations are a manifestation of pure science, transparency, and good will working together.

November was a trade for October, as far as I'm aware.  It's so the CPFV industry can still do crab combos.

Back to the descending device, give the Promar a look. It’s small, simple, and lets you leave your hook/bait on the bottom after releasing the descended fish.
