Is it a thing to fish striped bass from the kayak in the ocean? If yes, what’s the way to do it?

I’ve targeted them in the bay mostly.
On the pacific side, I’ve only seen incidental catches.
E.g. my partner hooked a nice one trolling for salmon about a mile off shore a few years back 🤔
If you happen upon a school working up anchovies, you’ll be in luck.

I’ve hypothesized trolling outside the surf zone near baker beach should be productive, but that area can get sketchy.
That’s also pretty “bay-adjacent” .

Do a search, there's some great old OG reports from Linda Mar, typically back casting stick baits and such into the surf from beyond the break produced some huge stripers.

I've only caught them trolling but if I was targeting them I'd cast into tidal rips around jetty's and other structure.

Thanks for the info! Stick bait, is that plugs and lures?

Plugs, lures or swim bait all work just use whatever you would use from shore. You want to fish the top or mid water so your retrieve speed will be different depending on which you choose. A lure like something from Lucky Craft would be where I would start.

Oh and congradulations you just exceeded 10 posts so you now have access to thousands of old "members only hookups and fishing reports".....dive in there's some great stories to be read and knowledge to be had!

I’ll definitely do that. I’m wondering though, what are the target species when rockfish fishing is closed?

Seems to be mostly halibut...

And freshwater! Trout, Kokanee, bass, etc.  Stripers can be found all over the delta too.

From the boat, only incidentally caught stripers in the ocean while mooching salmon.   In my college days, caught a lot of stripers at Ocean Beach.   Mostly tossing Mickey Jigs.   Bass Tub would get outside surf line and toss bait in to the surf to catch stripers.   I don’t know if stripers school in open ocean.

I think closed rock fishing, delta and lakes are main areas to target.  Stripers and bass in delta.

My brother in law fishes with artificial eels on the East Coast and he has nailed some in 45LB+ bracket. Live ones work better , but plastic ones have done well.
