Any advice on what rod holder/configuration to use for trolling?
I have a yakattak with a 2 piece arm, but I couldn’t find a comfortable trolling position. I either point my backward (but that way I can’t see the tip) or somehow I have my rod butt hitting my legs while pedaling.

What sort of trolling?

For halibut trolling with up to 1lb of weight I use a snipe air base (member here, great products) https://www.snipeairindustries.com/product-page/armor-plate-200 with a Scotty extension and Scotty or a rod holder. I have it set up on one side then going over the kayak with the bait on the other side from the mount.

For flat line trolling (say trout) I use the same base with a Scotty rocket launcher, one on each side or the kayak, and I can get a spread 15+ feet.

For downrigger trolling I use a Scotty 350 rodmaster 2 mounted on the opposite side from the downrigger and going over my legs.

I’ll try to find some pictures for you.

Sounds like you need to go up and out. Post a pick of our setup.

Same as 3$J I love the scotty rocket launchers for both salt and fresh water trolling.  I have a milk crate behind me with right and left side scotty bases so I only have to look to the left or right and slip the handle in after getting the line paid out and the rig running true.  I've never liked them farther forward.  But when drift fishing, I usually just tuck one under my leg.

All my rod tips are in front of me so I don’t have to look around too much. Here are some pics of the ones listed set up in my garage.

Thanks for the pictures! I’m interested in saltwater trolling, like halibut and lings.
Wow, that base looks really nice.. I didn’t know there was such a product!
I really like that setup with the rod crossing in front of you, I guess I’d need the taller arm for that.

Not to knock SAI... I have purchased a lot from them and they are great, but I made my own bases out of kydex plastic from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GBAHQVY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you have the tools, it is pretty easy.  I cut them out with a table saw, routed the edges to take the corners off, and drilled the holes.  Just add the scotty mounts, stainless t-bolts and knobs... I made enough for me and my buddy and it saved $$.

Also made downrigger mounts...

I forgot to mention with the orca rod holder you lift straight up to open it and get your rod. Make sure you use the locking Scotty base and lock it in otherwise the whole set up can come out of the base.

John, KLX140? Had a 08 for my son. Did a little jetting, opened up the air box and added a Full FMF exhaust system. Fun little bike!

Yeah that’s Sams bike. It’s the big wheeled version. Just the right size for her. Has similar mods but trashed the stock carb and have a vm26 carb on it. Fun little bike.

I had a KLX250 for about a year when I realized that I have to ride too much slab to get to dirt, so dual-sports are not right for me. I just sold my KTM390 ADV (fun bike) since Kayak fishing with Mabel has dominated my pastime activities (Haven't been able to teach her to ride). Still have my 700GS but still looking for that Goldilocks ADV bike. Maybe the new Transalp once they have the better color scheme.

Oh yeah, back to the rod holder thread - I have one like the Yakattack Omega that is tall enough to go over my legs and across and then a short one next to it that points the other direction. I don't know how people fish with rod tips behind them and out of site.  On youtube videos you see so many missed bites.

I had a KLX250

When I was a kid, my dad had a KDX200. We did a fair amount of enduros back in the mid '90s, and he liked that bike a lot for that purpose.  I rode a DR125 at the time.  I really miss motos, but there just isn't a good path for me to get into these days.  Too much $$, too far away from decent riding spots, and my wife isn't really into it, so...

This.  Gotta be able to see what is happening.  I don't have a Hobie - where you have cupholders, I have flush mount rod holders that work great unless I am trolling serious weight.  I am also a fan of the rod in a Scotty holder, spanning over my lap, especially for trolling heavy weights.

Just behind me isn't exactly out of sight, the rod tip is still visible I just have to look to the right or left.  But also I can feel most bites and am still looking at my tip often.

I have Scotty's on my Feelfree Moken and Ram Mount's on my Oldtown Big Water. Both have 8" risers and 6" extensions outward. I prefer them mounted on the rails as far forward as I can get them. That way I can see the smallest hit and they are out of the way during re-entry should the need arise.

Thanks for the info! I also made my plates out of HDPE, but they don’t look half as good as yours  :smt003
