Hello, recently bought a perception tribe kayak SOT 13.5 and it sits high on the water therefore easily pushed by wind and gets turned easily...

Is there a way to counter this?
rudder?
skeg?
lee board?

Thank you

Definitely a longer sailing rudder. A drift sock can be an easy quick fix but would recommend advice from someone who has used one. I have used them on boats but that is totally different from a kayak. I am sure there are many pros and cons.

I wouldn't advise a skeg if you are doing beach launches.

I have one of those same kayaks.  It tracks pretty well and is actually pretty fast, but it does sit high, especially if riding solo. I weigh about 220, and can totally see this being a tricky boat to control in the wind for folks who weigh less.

This would be a tricky kayak to mount a rudder to, since there aren't many flat surfaces to mount the controls to, and foot controls are probably out because of the molded foot rests.

I try to not have anything sticking up on mine, to keep wind factor to a minimum.  An upright landing net can cause a surprisingly strong sail effect.

Also worth a mention, my wind threshold is 10 knots, regardless of which kayak I am in. I know how frustrating it is when the wind doesn't cooperate on your fishing day, but winds stronger than that just push the kayak around too much and make it difficult to fish.

what about a retractable lee board on both sides?

I've never seen a lee board on a sit on top kayak, but no reason why it won't work. Just gotta get creative with the mounting. Just like an outrigger, be careful of placement, it could get in the way of paddling or fishing.

How many trips out to you have, and where have you paddled? Currents in the water can be a significant force also, and combined with wind, can make it very difficult to maintain course/speed.
