We had our annual birthday campout at Albion. Desertdiver, Goguygo, Waterboy and I.
On Saturday the 29th we went out, Two of the guys had taken off north i hit the whistle buoy and Desertdiver was slow to launch.
I watched 4 kayakers come out 2 men 2 boys 12-14. Boys had life jackets on everyone was in shorts, tshirts and sandles. nice 6 second swell but some pretty good wind and think calling for 15-20 gusts. They went straight for the No. point reef and fished the outer kelp beds. All were catching Blues . One of the men went close by me so I asked if he had a life jacket (yep right behind in the bungee).
I asked if they had a radio (yes 1 of the boys has it in their yak)
I watched from a distance as the boys had a great time catching blues, I watched the guy I encountered throw 3 blues into the back of yak just flopping around.
I couldn't let it go the whole scenario was just driving me crazy.
No wet suits
Not wearing life jackets
1 radio between 4 given to a youth who may or may not know how to use it or have safe access to it
No nets
No paddles only peddles
Fishing a reef way out of the cove on a windy day that is known to get surprise waves.
I cruised up to the same guy again... Hey buddy umm why don't you slit the gills of those fish or rip them out . (why ? Is that necessary) Its a little more humane and bleeding out your fish can help the taste.
Hey and by the way I don't want to be rude but could you please put that life jacket on? This water is around 50* and you really only have about 5 min. to hypothermia .
He didn't have a knife or wood shampoo so I showed him how to just rip the gills out as he put his lif jacket on.
Instantly he turns and starts throwing up, it was a little rough out there. On the 3rd heave overboard he goes. Been there done that.
He tries to climb on his upside down yak, I tell him to get off and I will flip it and help him on. He trusts me through instant chattering teeth.
I flip it over with 1 swing and hold on to it while he climbs on.  i go around gathering his stuff and fish not paying attention to my position. Perfect timing I lean out to grab something of his and I get the wave I worried for them about.
Ove I go I flip my yak over climb in he grabbed one of my poles and I picked up everything else (POOL NOODLED) except my Hobie outback seat
He lost his pole and seat.
Pissed off he left his friends out there and went back in.
Desetdiver hears my call on his way out and chews out 2 other well equipped yakers at the point who didn't bother to respond.
My cell phone drowned also it used to be water proof. I raced to Ukiah to get a new phone and try to replace seat(special order only 400 BUCKS!!!!!!)
I lost a day and a have running around tech said phone was toast they opened it and salt water poured out.
ANYONE HAVE A SEAT THEY WANT TO SELL???????

Got an extra revo 2014 style pre-vantage seat I’ll give away no cost. Old kayak stolen but didn’t take any of my gear. If it’s a vantage, sorry I need it.

Many fishermen spend their lives chasing fish, only to realize that it was themselves that they were chasing.

The "Salty" in my handle refers to my attitude, not the waters I fish

Wow. Glad everyone is safe.

We were up at Russian Gulch at the time.  That ocean was no joke.

Those boy's behavior wasn't much better after quiet hour Saturday night.  The campground at Albion would be a lot more enjoyable if groups like those camped at the west end of the C section would stay home!

Sounds like he put his PFD on seconds before he went in? You might have saved his life!
Sure is frustrating to have to lose gear and a day's fishing time assisting someone else - a stranger no less - who wasn't prepared.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
