I got a free Apple watch (long story), which I've had for about a week. So far, I'm sorta underwhelmed, but that my be because I'm too lazy to learn how to do much of anything with it.

Anyways, I'm wondering if anybody here has found any good uses for an Apple watch when fishing/kayaking.

I use an apple watch. I found it's difficult to wear with the sleeve seals on my dry suit. I have to pull up the sleeve so it doesn't get under or cover the watch. It is convenient for taking calls or messages while on the water, but I don't get many of those.

Yes, the drysuit wrist gasket is going to be a problem. It'll definitely be better than the iPhone for texting on the water, so that's a (small) plus...

Somehow reading this made me dream last night of owning an apple watch.   :smt005  I have a samsung one someone gave me, and I did like wearing it when kayaking if I wanted to use my phone, safely tucked away in my dry bag. I don't know about apple watches, but figure they have many similarities like a compass and weather info etc.

GaiaGPS has an app that is supposed to work on the Applewatch (GPS enabled mapping and tracking), but so far I have found it very buggy. If it worked as expected it would be great. This is the reason I wanted an Applewatch, and it is very disappointing.

Other than that, I like the compass app because it has my GPS coordinates in case of an emergency (backup GPS), I use the timer function for crab pot soaks (touchless because I can start the timers with my voice if close enough to shore for cell signal), and sending texts to the family on the beach. Oh I also use the "tides" app, it has a AppleWatch app, so you can see the tides on the watch.

Windy has a AppleWatch app too, but I don't find it that useful. The watch also has a built in short wave radio that I have not been able to get to work, but in theory you can use it to communicate with other applewatch users.

The watch has to see your skin, so it is not very convenient to wear with a wetsuit, but doable. Dry suit would be tough.

Would love to hear if anyone else has found some uses.

I use it sometimes to track my distance/route using Strava, so kind of cool. Of course heavy duty apps like Navionics can do that as well, at the expense of some phone battery life.

That's a bummer, as I use GaiaGPS and was hoping the watch would work seamlessly with it.
