Doesn't look very deep. I would be worried about a big one flopping out.

+1, I like the rubber nets for fish that I may release, but if I get a salmon boat side and get a positive ID that it is in fact a king, it’s not getting released. More depth will ensure once in the net, it’s a done deal.

This for a boat or yak?
For the yak.

Thanks for the responses, I was concerned with it being a bit shallow.

Curious if anyone here has ever gaffed a salmon ? Please correct me if i am wrong but i believe it is legal as long as it is the correct take. Maybe frowned upon as well?

Oh course a net is required on-board as well.  :smt001

Sorry, being lazy about looking it up. Hoping someone knows off-hand?

I bring this up as far as the larger salmon and not having to carry a huge net.

Unfortunately, i have not been blessed with catching a salmon on a kayak.

Alex..

I've gaffed salmon on my AI.

I live to gaff, so when I'm fishing in the ocean, I gaff everything I plan on keeping. In fact, I usually forget to even bring a net with me...

Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Stoked!  Thanks!  This is what IÂ’ve been looking for.  I havenÂ’t caught a salmon yet, thought this might be the year but IÂ’ll have to wait.  I wanted to add the required net to my setup which is really minimal as is, thereÂ’s been moments out there I thought it would come in handy.  Hopefully it wonÂ’t be in the way, thatÂ’s the only thing I can see being a downside.

Not sure about gaffing salmon before ID, heat of the moment might make the net a better choice to avoid a mistake.

Looking forward to the huge salmon next year!!  [emoji14]

Nice. Thanks for confirming.

My salmon IDing while the fish is in the water is not well enough for me to gaff. I unfortunately still rely on looking at the gums. I do try and net safely and return to the water with as little handling as possible if not legal.

I hopefully can control my want for fresh salmon. I am already considering plans for a trip up the Oregon coast.  :smt007

FWIW, this is the method I use to ID salmon on the water.  (Tail method.)

There are some good collapsible nets out there that cost a little more but worth it imo Cant remember the brand i have but will look and report back

At least theres no hurry being there wont be a season

About gaffing salmon usually can tell before you even see the fish what it is But not always obvious even when you can see it

Thanks, I picked up one the the ego nets but def let me know about any other worthy nets.  Going to start putting one up onboard the kayak so I can get used to it being there.  I always gaff the halibut I can tell are legal, but will be nice to have the net assist undersize release.  Going with a two hook barbless salmon style rig this year for halibut.  I think I kept 9 last year, caught a lot more than that, will feel good to not cause as much damage to the ones I let go.  I fly fish barbless because I want to minimize damage to the trout so it seems appropriate to consider the halibut I don’t keep.

It's OK to gaff salmon. It is easier said than done in a kayak. Larger ones will break your heart. I net every fish over 10#s now. Halibut, lines etc. Get the gaff.
