Heads up.  This net does not meet legal size if you will be using the net to meet net requirement for California regulation to accompany a gaff.  No gaff on board, good to go.

How is there any connection between a gaff and net size? Where is that in the regs?

28.65 (d) No gaff hook shall be used to take or assist in landing any fin fish shorter than the minimum size limit. For the purpose of this section a gaff hook is any hook with or without a handle used to assist in landing fish or to take fish in such a manner that the fish does not take the hook voluntarily in its mouth. No person shall take fin fish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landing net shall be not less than eighteen inches in diameter.

Think this might be the one where heÂ’s finding the correlation?

That just says you have to carry a net with an 18” diameter, and that you can’t gaff undersized fish. Whether you carry a gaff or not, you’re supposed to have a net that meets the 18” size.

He is selling a net.

There is nothing in his description that says it is for the ocean.  :smt119

Thanks for reminding us of the net and gaff regulations for the ocean though. :smt002

I bet if you measure from top of the net to the handle that it's > 18" and IS legal for ocean requirements.  :smt003

Eh, I did the math on the long ways measurement, and it's probably 17.5".

You will have to bend this net a tiny bit to make it ocean legal  :smt005
