I realize this is not fishing or kayak related, but was thinking some of the members that live in the Sierras might have some valuable local input.
I am thinking of taking my 4yr and 9yr old daughters up to do some mild sledding and general fun in the snow.  Looking for a spot thats not too crowded or extremely steep, and preferably free.
Right now I am thinking of one of the trailheads in the emigrant gap area, but figured it would be good to reach out for local advice with regards to current conditions.
FWIW we will be in our awd minivan and have our own gear.
Thanks in advance, Allen

I don’t live in the sierras, but I do have a 5 year old that we took to the snow for the same type of activities you described. We ended up on highway 4 past Camp Connell near Cottage Springs.there is a hillside on the northwest side of the highway, with parking on the opposite side of the highway. We exited on Beatrice drive and found some parking in the small neighborhood there. There are several parking areas in the same general area, but they had filled up by the time we got there.

It is free, we did some modest sledding and spent the rest of the time building a snowman and having hot soup and cocoa from our camp stove. Good spot, maybe others can point out something better, but seems to check off the boxes except for the crowded part.
With gratitude and humility

Depending on when you go will depend on where there is good sledding hills.  For example, this morning there's good sledding in the Apple Hill area East of Placerville.  I take our grand kids to Boa Vista Orchards, which has a gradual slope hill accessible from the parking lot.  It is also one of the only High Hill apple farms that is open year round, so there's a good place to have lunch, buy food, etc.
Then up the road at Fresh Pond, past Pollock Pines is a large store and gas station that has a tubing hill behind it.  It is very popular and can get crowded on weekends, but since it's higher, more likely to have snow.
All in all, going up hwy 50 is a better bet than going up hwy 80 because of the traffic and crowds.

Thanks for the replies, we're probably headed out tomorrow 3/30, loading up the van tonight and make the final decision on where to go in the morning.

Hwy 80, Kingsvale tubing  and at Donner Summit  Soda Springs  has the best tubing hill  plus Planet  Kids for the youngest. Also the cheapest  little  kid  beginner ski and snowboarding  lessons.

Hwy 50, probably  Fresh  Pond with these  conditions  and at the  top of Echo  Summit  is a tubing  specific  resort- can remember  name at the moment.

In the game of biggest fish, if you can't enjoy routinely gettin' your ass handed to you, by great fishermen, then you don't belong in the NCKA.
