We just locked down our honeymoon vacation for Bora Bora and Moorea. We will be there from 7/29-8/5. 3 nights in Moorea and 4 night in Bora Bora. I told my wife she should do a whole day spa, so I go catch some fish for dinner (since dinner is not included in the package  :smt003). I researched online to see what good out there, but it was somewhat disappointing. There are a few fishing guides, but all of them have average reviews. Has anyone fished out there? Any recommendation of what should I look for?

Bumping this thread. Im headed there later this year and was wondering if anyone knows about current fishing regulations/restrictions? Are there MPAs in Moorea that I need to be aware of? Has anyone been recently and have advice? Surprisingly hard to find info online
A jerk at one end of the line waiting for a jerk at the other end.

Oh boy! I am so excited for you! When are you going and where are you lodging? Send me a pm and we can chat about it. It has been so many years and I'm still missing it every day! If you headed to Bora Bora, I could link you up with this local fisherman to take you out for Marlin, YFT, Mahi, etc (December is the best). He was a fraction of the cost compares to booking via hotel.

As far as shore based fishing, I never really ventured out the hotel. If you stay in over water bungalow, respectfully ask if you could fish off your deck. Most hotel has a police of no fishing, but the staff told me as long as no other guests complaining, you are fine. Bring good amount of plugs and sabiki, etc. There are so much reef fish at Hilton Moorea.

Remember, Moorea and Bora bora are  atolls.. that is they are surrounded by reefs Nearly all the water inside the atol is less than 10' deep and very warm. Most of the great fishing for barracuda, wahoo, tuna etc is going to be outside the reefs in blue water.. and then its going to be sort of same species you'd target in Hawaii. But I doubt you'll find those species inside the reef.

You can only get through the reef in a couple places and the currents can be 6 knots or better.
likely trevally, small barracuda, groupers and rays. I would think fishing guide or not, there are lots of local boats running around that would take you out in the briny blue.  If it were me I would call the Bora Bora Yacht club and see if there are some fisherman there or someone local to recommend.

P.S. you might want to download the nautical charts and study the water a little bit... try this link for starters.. https://www.nauticalchartsonline.com/chart/zoom?chart=SHOM7466
