Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ram Ball with Spline Post Adapter
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:19:22 PM »
Do any of you have one of these? It looks like it will fit the holes in a T-13 Mod Pod but doesn't really state it is the same post as a Scotty.

I was going to get one of these and add a Ram ball to it but the spline post adapter is a cleaner setup.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / New Style Danielson "Deluxe" Trap
« on: April 13, 2018, 11:48:28 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has seen this trap in a store for sale. I had a quick look at one and thought I could find one no problem but I haven't had any luck. It has a blue coating on the cage,  the doors are wider than the original with florescent hinges , and it has a top door which is great. I know the Promar has a top hatch but I think this one is larger.

I saw one at Sportsman's Warehouse however it had line, a float, gauge and whatever. I don't need all that stuff so I am looking for just the trap. I'm heading up north next week and will stop by Outdoor Pro and Sprotsman's Warhouse and see if they have just the trap for sale. I'll post back if I find one but if someone knows where I can pick one up let me know.

I have had some problems with my wheels getting yanked sideways going over large obstacles. A friend of mine has one of those supper hole wheels and doesn't have the same problem so I came up with this idea. I spliced some crab line on the Wheeleez then spliced an eye at a length that is lower than the top of the yak, then thread a strap through it and you are good to go.

General Fishing Tips / Sand Dab Fishing
« on: March 13, 2018, 12:07:08 PM »

I found the post below and it seemed to have a lot of great information in it however I guess it was deleted by the person who posted it? I have been searching around for more info but I can't seem to find a good write up. If someone can send me a link to a good write up I would appreciate it.

We have been going out in about 120 feet and had good luck with dabs but sometimes the bite drops off or the school moves on. I have read about using a larger hook so only the large ones get hooked etc. I have used that 12 hook setup however that thing would hook into everything on the yak including myself so we cut those in thirds and also use Sabiki rigs. It seems like they just bite on the bottom 2 or 3 hooks anyway. Just looking for more info about preferable tides, equipment, etc...

Sand Dabs are one of my favorite fish to eat.

General Fishing Tips / Avet SX G2 or...?
« on: March 10, 2018, 08:23:01 PM »
I have been looking for a reel to match up to a Trevala. I kind of decided on the SX G2 since they will probably discontinue the original at some point, the G2 has a drilled rail for the drag, and there is increased drag. I was thinking of running 30# braid on it, mainly fishing lingcod and rockfish.

I know there are a lot of great other reals out there like the Okuma low profile, Diawa Saltist and Lexa but I want to buy American like the Avet or Sieglar.

Do you guys spool the whole thing with braid? I was figuring on doing that since that stuff lasts a long time! No need for mono except the leader off of a swivel the way I see it.

Do you run heavier than 30# for lings?

It will be fun to try out some of this lite gear!

General Fishing Tips / Trevala Rod Selection & 2 piece?
« on: March 10, 2018, 05:21:21 PM »
I have been using my old Ugly Stick and Penn for years. After looking at the Trevala posts I think I am going to try one of those with an Avet reel (more on the Avet later).

After looking at the many different rods I figured I would ask you guys what you use. From what I have read it is the TVC70ML 7 foot ML Medium Fast 20-50 pound. I think I would prefer a 6'ish pole so I was thinking of the TV66M which is a 6'6" M  Medium Fast 30-65 pound. The jigs I usually use seem better suited to the Medium pole.

I usually use 6 ounce jig heads for lingcod because of swell/current so I was just wondering if the lighter pole would handle the 6 ounce jigs. Any first hand experience would be appreciated. I have never fished with tackle that light before going after lings and rockfish, it looks like fun. I went to Dicks to see if they had any Trevala rods, they did and I was impressed.

I have also never used a two piece pole for kayak fishing. Has anyone had any problems using a two piece? Might be better for stowing during rough launches and landings.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / 3mm, 5mm, 7mm, Farmer John
« on: March 05, 2018, 09:49:49 PM »
I really like this 3mm but I don't feel comfortable way offshore with a 3mm.

https://www.nrs.com/product/17266.03/nrs-mens-30-farmer-john-wetsuit

I use a 7mm and was going to have it altered by the wetsuit shop in Monterey however she said they do not have a dual function zipper (top down - bottom up), she uses a heavy duty zipper. It is $60 for the alteration.  I am thinking of going to a 5mm, that might be a nice compromise.

I contacted NRS and asked if they might be making a 5mm anytime soon. He said no... I asked if he knew where they get their zipper...no luck.

So!  I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good quality 5mm Farmer John I could have altered some day.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Cell Phone Case
« on: March 05, 2018, 09:19:52 PM »
I am looking for a good case for a cell phone that I can keep around my neck. Has anyone used either of these? Might be nice if keys fit in there also.

https://www.amazon.com/Sea-Summit-TPU-Accessory-Case/dp/B009PM7DJU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1520312796&sr=8-6&keywords=sea+to+summit+tpu+accessory+case

https://www.amazon.com/DRY-PAK-DP-46-Case-Cellphones/dp/B000FE9CAK

From reading the reviews it seems like it is difficult to put the phone in the case because of plastic on plastic. Can you take a picture through one of these cases? Probably not...

CA Regulations / Crab Trap Regulations
« on: March 01, 2018, 10:50:48 PM »
A "guy I know" needs to get in compliance with the crab trap regs.

https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=150181&inline

You need the GO ID on your buoy.

It seems like the Danileson traps just need to have the opening of one of the rings bent open to 5" and use one length of rotten cotton to attach the ring and they are good to go.

Now for the Promar collapsible trap. Do you need just one ring on the top with rotten cotton and that is good enough because the netting will open larger than 5"?

Either trap does not really need two escape rings as far as I can see although the Danileson does have two.

Thanks,

Loren

CA Regulations / Two Pole Question about Sand Dab & Ling Cod Fishing
« on: February 26, 2018, 10:16:12 PM »
I have never had two poles on the yak yet but I am just trying to understand the rules. Checked the Fish and Game site but it is a bit confusing.

Can I have one pole rigged up with say 4 sand dab hooks and fish for Lings with the other pole?

If I catch Lings or Rock Fish and they are on the yak can I use a four hook setup for dabs after I have caught the lings or am I limited to two hooks for dabs?

All these rules are a pain!

General Talk / Fiji Recomendations
« on: February 26, 2018, 09:58:45 PM »
We are heading to Fiji this year (Samoa first) and looking for a recommendation for a place off the main Island. The string of islands to the west look like a nice quite place and there is definitely good fishing there. Has anyone been there that can recommend a good place? A lot of places have kayaks so it should be good fun.

Thanks for any info!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hinged Pod II for an older T13
« on: February 22, 2018, 05:43:24 PM »
Okay...last question :smt003

I was wondering if the hinged pod II from a 2017 T13 would fit on a 2014 T13, it would take a bit of work installing the quick release latches but I doubt it would fit the older yak anyway.  I really like how the Jackson's have a hinge on the main compartment.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Rigging up an OK T13
« on: February 22, 2018, 05:36:06 PM »
I have been looking for a good write up on rigging up a T13 with some pictures. I really want to get my yak setup much better. I found one subject on it in this forum but all the pictures are missing because they used Photo Bucket.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Mounting a Garmin Striker 5 on an OK T13
« on: February 22, 2018, 05:29:47 PM »
I think I have decided on buying the Striker because I don't really need the map feature. I was wondering if anyone has mounted a Striker under the sonar shield.

The previous owner had a Ram ball mounted on the flat under the sonar shield so I am trying to get ideas of how some of you have mounted the FF. I have seen most mounted on the wall under the sonar shield.

I also need some info on using duct seal to mount the transducer inside the hull. I have a vague idea from a few posts. It seems like you put the duct seal in the hull, then embed the transducer inside of it. Do you push it all the way so it contacts the hull. The transducers these days are HUGE!

If you could forward a link showing how someone has done any of this I would appreciate it! I have been searching for a couple of days but have not come up with much.
