Bring the salmon gear..! Looks like we're in that 6-8 year cycle according to the jack counts we got on the rivers last year. With these rains and the snow we've gotten this year.....I think it's going to start bringing in the toads.

Hang in there brother. I'm finishing up on a divorce, was married for 29+ years. The best thing I did for myself was going back to church.
Happy birthday, mine was yesterday....54.

What section did you fish? I've been bouncing between the South Fork Eel the Russian and the Mad rivers. I'll be back on the Mad this coming weekend.

I'll be there, not missing it this year. Couldn't make it last year was too busy chasing steelhead up north.

Way cool pics, love seeing the sturgeon. This lack of rain is freakin killing me, I have to look at my drift boat sitting there begging me to take him out to fish. I might be making a trip up to Oregon just to get rid of this itch....and it's a bad one.

Way cool, love your photos. I have to get you and your camera on the South Fork Eel in my drift boat chasing some steelhead this year, you can even bring Badger, he can keep my dog company......we'll do a Myers Flat down drift, Avenue of the Giants, the scenery is unbelievable.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: Smith/Chetco Road Trip February 2014

I'm definitely in, sounds like a fun trip. Week days would be best, a lot less traffic on the river but I'm game for either weekends or week days. Most of the people who fish Smith and Chetco out of a drift boat are side drifting for steelhead, very important not to cross over the fish in clear water. I run the same type of anchor (pyramid), you have to be careful with them they can cost you. Never anchor in fast water and when traveling thru fast water make sure you wrap the rope around something to make sure it doesn't slip. A couple years ago a guide lost his life on the Smith below the forks, his rope slipped the anchor hit the bottom locked up on some rocks and pulled the ass end of the drift boat under. His client made it out alive but not the guide.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Smith River steelhead...

I usually fish the Smith 3 to 4 times a year, I have a 17' drift boat (Fish rite), been fishing it for about 9 years now. I stay at the Hiouchi Motel, good price and clean, east of the motel about a half mile on the north side of 199 is the place that will shuttle your vehicle for you, I think they charge $15. I start fishing for salmon after a good rise in the river, which hopefully happens soon, back bouncing roe. Chasing steelhead I'm side drifting, for weight I'm running the Mad river drifters 95% of the time, far fewer snags and I really like the way they glide thru the water. When I'm going to drift a deep hole I'll go with my big slinkies, gets the weight down right away. I also heard the hatchery isn't hauling fish up river anymore, not sure if this is true or not. The Smith clears in hours, which means it gets hit hard by all the guides in the area, I counted 13 drift boats in just one section I was running. They also have a tournament on the river, don't want to fish it for a few days after that.

The drift boat is staying at home, my truck is broke down and won't be fixed for a couple more weeks. You see a white subaru at lone pine or any other hole, like "fig tree hole" (I think I saw that location in one of your photos and a few other locations that I recognize) you better stop and fish, there's always plenty of room for you at any hole I'm fishing, well maybe....lol. See ya up there.
