Safety First / Re: Safety tip for parents of toddlers
« on: January 30, 2025, 01:45:08 PM »
As a parent of 2 (who are now 9 and 7), button batteries became a hate for me. After learning the shiny little pellets are deadly, I became a bit "hyperaware" of them. I've seen them thrown away in terrible places too, once even on the ground at a park. So many toddler toys (and books that make noise, etc) use them too.
I'll vote for the next politician who bans the use of these in toys, I don't care which party you are!

Free, but limited. Not a problem if you are arriving early. Except Sundays, they block most of the parking for a farmers market.
Wait, free?!  We should do a halibut hunt hookup there!

Yes, some of the big advantages are free parking (that isn't limited to 3 hours) and public restrooms. The other launch is between two fancy restaurants and everything is setup to make it difficult to use. This one is also exclusively for kayaks and smaller craft, so no having to wait in line with bigger boats. I never used that other ramp, opted to use the beach instead, which was also not great if it wasn't high tide. This launch is also setup to be more ADA compliant, my mom was able to use the launch without getting her feet wet or having to bend over onto an unstable platform. I know almost everyone here is physically fit, but, with my tandem, I often take less physically fit people out and it is nice to add to the list a location that has a launch that they will be able to use easily.
Looks interesting and I’ll check it out. For my benefit, is there an advantage to this new boat launch over the public boat ramp nearby,  next to the joinery?

Got a chance to try the launch out yesterday. Couple of things to note:
1. The gate when unlocked appears to be closed, but opens with a good push.
2. At negative tide the boat lunch is in the mud (as told to me by a club member).
3. I don't understand how to use the "cradle launch", but the "wheel launch" worked if you are helping someone out or if you are just launching your kayak without sitting in it (bring rope). Didn't work to have us both sit in the launch and try to go.

Here is a picture of my mom in the kayak on the wheel launch area. Worked great to push the kayak into the water. No getting wet and she was ready to go (but turned around to pick me up). Getting out of the water worked by hopping off the kayak at the dock and pulling the kayak from a bow tied rope.

CA Regulations / Re: 2025 Rockfish Regs are Up
« on: January 23, 2025, 01:09:20 PM »
I am super excited for the removal of the cab size limit as I often catch slightly undersized cabs when I am poke polling for monkey faced eels. I have gotten greenlings too. With the removal of this size limit I don't have to bring measuring devices with me, one less thing I need to worry about!
Fried whole both of these fish are super good!

I think cabs are very tasty!  however they are somewhat bony, and I personally wouldn't want one smaller than 15".  Their numbers seem low to me as well, so not sure why the change to remove their size limit.

Same!  One of my favorites, actually.  I tend to bread and fry, usually beer battered.  Sometimes panko breaded or grilled/griddled for tacos, always good that way!

Agree with sizing also, smaller ones wouldn't yield much meat.  I catch one every third trip or so to my normal spot.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Kokanee Rod Recommend
« on: January 21, 2025, 01:15:14 PM »
I found an old used lamiglas 6 foot rod that I use (spinning). I think the best is to look at ultralight, but also slow action I think is important. I looked for a rod that can stay bent for long periods of time without deforming, so I tried to focus on fiberglass rods instead of graphite. I imagine carbon fiber would work real nice too, but not really necessary for the price. I'm not super experienced at getting kokanee, but I rarely have a problem with fish getting away after a hookup. I use double hooks and when that pole pops off the DR it really does a nice job setting.

Anyway, this is what I was told, feel free to dispute guys. Ultralight, slow action fiberglass rod.

I was in Sausalito on Sunday scouting for herring and I noticed that a dock that had been locked was open. I asked the person present and they said the Sausalito Community Boating Center (SCBC) just opened a NON-motorized Dock and launch for public use! There is a gate that is locked from sunset to sunrise. This is an ADA friendly launch as well, that look quite fancy. Once side had rollers and the other had a sinking basked type launch (my words, not sure the official term). It is right next to Dunphy parking lot and restrooms as well. I was very excited as launch from the "beach" area can be hard during lower tides. Their website is here (not much info on the new launch though)
https://sausalitocommunityboating.org/

Here are a few pictures of the new launch and dock (ignore the black box, that was a guy who wanted to play on his phone forever). Last picture is the view as you leave the dock, to give an idea of location:

General Fishing Tips / Re: My 2024 Fish count
« on: January 03, 2025, 12:18:22 PM »
I was inspired by you last year Joe and kept a journal too. Not nearly as impressive as yours, but it's something. Anything that is marked 'lunch fishing' is about 10 minutes I get to fish during my lunch break at work. Anyone can take a look on my google sheet:

Looking forward to another fishing year!

General Talk / Re: Upgraded my fleet today!

Oh no Kevin, what color is it? You were always so noticeable with your orange and black kayak!

I think my family will be there! Didn't think about the crawdads, might have to bring our traps!

Friday Saturday work better for me, although I have the 27th off. I might head up there on the 27th for a day trip. Let me check in with the fam if we want to camp up there on the 21 and 22 or 28 and 29. 28 is not as good for me because that is the opener for Quail season, and I might want to do that instead. We had such a good time camping up there early in the summer, we all want to go back and it just didn't work out.

Man I want to get up there again so bad! Thanks for the updates!

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Thinking about a 3D printer

Just a heads up for those who are interested in 3D printing, your local library may have a 3D printer and allow access to it for free. Support local libraries!

General Talk / Re: Anyone fish in a tandem?
« on: July 24, 2024, 09:11:31 AM »
I'm not sure I will be much help because it sounds like you are mostly interested in pedal kayaks, but I use a Crescent Crew Paddle kayak. It is a tandem but is also very functional as a single person kayak. I love it quite a bit and can't imagine another kayak that would fit our needs better. I often troll for kokanee, but due to how I setup the downrigger (I attached it using the secondary seat attachment straps) I can only use one chair when trolling with the downrigger. The boat is big enough that my two boys (age 6 and 8 ) can sit in the front while we troll (on the fishing cooler) and I can hand the rod to them when we hook up with a kokanee.

Last year my brother-in-law and I took it out at New Brighton and we both fished for baitfish and halibut. While we didn't get any halibut, we got quite a few mackerel (my wife's favorite fish) and anchovies that we cooked up at camp.

I also took my father out on it two years ago at Doran Beach, where we were able to get some nice Dungeness. He was sick with cancer at the time and would not have been able to paddle himself out there. He passed away about a year after that, but it was one of our last fishing trips.

And yes, my wife and I also use it together often.

So I know lots of people call them "divorce boats", but another perspective is it gets people out on the water that wouldn't be able to go out on their own or be able to keep up. I enjoy trips alone on it, but the trips with others tend to be extra special.

Wow, thanks for the report Joe! As one of my closest bodies of water, I really need to start fishing at Berryessa! Smittle Creek launch isn't too far and those eagle trout are looking really nice!
