General Talk / My New Kayak
« on: February 13, 2025, 03:59:52 PM »
My new Pro Angler 14! Can’t wait to get it rigged up and out on the water. I may have to take it for a test run this next week after I get off work. This is my first Hobie and I am unsure of how I want to connect my Rod holders? On my Radar 135 I had the T slots and pretty much all yakattack rodholders and heavy duty mounts. On the PA’s H rail should I use the H rail mounts or the Yakattack Mighty double clamp mounts on the H rails. I troll for Halibut and larger fish when I’m not fishing local lakes. I also need a Scotty mount for a small downrigger and crab pulley.

Hobie Kayaks / 70# Minn Kota Riptide on Pro Angler
« on: February 08, 2025, 07:53:12 AM »
I just purchased a 2023 Pro Angler 14, on clearance. I think I got a great deal and it should be delivered this next week. I already have a 70# Riptide with gps and spot lock on my full size boat with a quick release mount. Has anyone else ran a 70# bow mount motor? I searched for weight differences between the 70# and the 55# motor, but couldn’t find it. It would be real convenient to be able to move the motor between boats.

General Fishing Tips / Bodega bay perch
« on: January 19, 2025, 04:21:28 PM »
Never fished for perch in the ocean. Next week I am heading to Bodega (Doran) for some kayak crabbing and was going to drift for some perch. What type of perch are in the Doran Beach area and is there a size limit? I was told to use gulp sand worms or pieces of shrimp. Any other suggestions?

General Fishing Tips / Bodega, Fort Bragg and Westport
« on: June 07, 2024, 12:14:11 AM »
I’m taking a 2 week trip from Bodega to Fort Bragg and then Westport. I've been going to Bodega my whole life, however, Fort Bragg and Westport is all new to me. I’ll be taking my Radar 135. I’m looking for any advice on launching, fishing and crabbing the area from my Kayak. Let me know!

General Fishing Tips / Alameda Rock Wall advice
« on: April 12, 2024, 03:52:09 PM »
I am new to kayak fishing and plan to fish the ARW Tournament. I would normally fish from my 23’ boat around Berkeley, op, Candlestick, bird cage, the rockpiles and other areas. Never really fished the ARW area. The closest I would get to there was anchoring near the yellow bouy (Oakland) and letting the kids catch sharks. I plan on getting over there to fish in a couple weeks, I’ll be by myself. When I was in my powerboat I never worried about the tidal flow direction and making it back to the dock. Any advice on this location would be greatly appreciated or if you can point me right direction to educate myself. Am I over thinking this? Ideally I would normally like to fish 2 hours before and after the tide changes.

I’ll be using a Radar 135 with a Helix Pedal drive.

Introductions / New here since 2012!
« on: April 02, 2024, 09:18:48 PM »
Just wanted to introduce myself, I’m Rodney or Fishin_Rod or 46Wilyz in the rock crawling world. I joined here 12 years ago and never committed to getting a kayak until a couple months ago. I bought my first kayak, I have a Radar 135 pedal drive. I live pretty close to Melones Reservoir but have always loved fishing for halibut, striper, sturgeon, rockfish and salmon. I sold my big boat a few years ago and now have a 16’ dual console aluminum boat and my kayak. I’ve been having fun catching trout out of my kayak and looking to try for some larger fish and crabs. Hopefully maybe meet some people here that would not mind me tagging along at some point.

Safety First / crabbing out of pillar point during mavericks

I am going to HMB this wed through sun. I have never been there while mavericks is going.  Is it safe to drop crab pots outside the harbor?

Places to Launch and Camp / HMB in April
« on: February 10, 2012, 06:10:14 PM »
I am staying at Half Moon Bay SB campground the second week in April (all week). I have never camped in HMB before and do not know very much about it. I am brand new to kayaking, so new I have not bought my own kayak yet. If I wanted to do some crabbing would I be able to beach launch from the camping area?

I normally fish / crab around Bodega in my bigger boat or my Valco aluminum.

Thanks,
Rodney
