General Talk / Florida Trip
« on: March 17, 2025, 08:18:55 AM »
Well I guess I’m very competitive in a passive aggressive way and Eric’s post about hand feeding the tarpon triggered my FOMO. So I jumped on a plane to Miami and drove down to Robbie’s in Islamorada. Had some food and paid the fee to get a bucket of Ballyhoo and fed the tarpon.
But oh shit,  Eric also attended a wedding!
Still in the grips of social media FOMO, I drove around the outer Miami area looking for a wedding I could crash. I found matrimonial proceedings involving a Cuban-American and Chilean couple and was able to blend in with my fragmented Spanish. My dance moves to Despacito impressed all, and needless to say this smoking Chinella is flying home with me.

General Fishing Tips / Salmon Season?

I heard there is going to be a one month salmon season in May with a 27” minimum. Anyone have any more info?

General Fishing Tips / Feel Free fish kill bag

These bags are on sale. I love mine since it has an inner liner which keeps the main bag clean. You can put ice packs between the bag and liner, keeping them un-slimed as well. My large bag fits up to a 36” halibut. It barely fits on the Lynx so I often just use it for home transport of fish.

General Fishing Tips / Shark Handling
« on: January 18, 2025, 12:44:42 PM »
I've caught Dogfish, Leopard Sharks and Soupfins (Topes) and hooked a Thresher.  I've always been wary of their mouths but not sure how wary I need to be. They can all cut line, but I've been told that you can put your hand inside a leopard shark mouth with no consequences. I don't trust that, but how careful do I need to be with those versus Soupfins, which do seem to have small sharp teeth versus Threshers, etc..  Seven Gills definitely look like they could take a finger off and are twisty and squirmy to boot.
On Threshers it seems the tail is quite a hazard but I assume they could give a bad bite as well.
When I caught that 5 1/2' Soupfin a few years ago I was afraid to hold it (after seeing that video of that dad losing a finger to a small Black Tip) and had Pat hold it for a photo.
I did get bit by a 20" halibut once and that wasn't fun but it wasn't going to take my thumb off.

Any experienced rundown on these various species and what damage they can do?

General Fishing Tips / My 2024 Fish count
« on: January 03, 2025, 09:58:46 AM »
Attached is my 2024 fish spreadsheet.
There were some hits and misses, but it was an overall improvement over 2023 and 2022.
Time On the Water, learning some areas and listening to better anglers - I'm feeling solidly intermediate now, getting better at some things (halibut and trout) and still in the dark on others (crappie, perch, reservoirs with the word "New" in them).

I roughly estimate that I caught between $1,000 and $2,200 worth of keeper fish, depending on assumed price/per pound, etc.
I have not calculated my gas/electric/mileage costs but I'm guessing it exceeds that.

AOTY / AOTY is quite the horse race for 2024 with a photo finish
« on: December 19, 2024, 11:52:47 PM »
It's late December and the weather looks iffy through the end of the month. But with only a few points separating the top 3 (out of over 1600 pts!) any 1/4"- 1/2" upgrade could win it. I tried for crappie and bass today at Clear Lake and could only get a couple of real nice catfish (28", 25") that didn't add any points for me. Strategies to secure my lead are slim at this point. Very vulnerable.

I think I'm gonna hit Pyramid on Saturday at the Marina, possibly Warrior Point.
Looks to be calm and sunny with temps in the 50s to 60s.
Some FnS people are going to be there.
Some large fish have been caught with several 20 pounders.

General Fishing Tips / Hobie drive fail
« on: September 27, 2024, 09:07:20 AM »
While fishing TC this week I noticed my 180 drive felt pretty stiff and tight. I had adjusted the slack previously in my garage but thought I had left enough play in the cables. So I’m wondering if the temperature difference going from warm garage to cool water made it tighten. Anyway towards the end of my trip it got real crunchy and resistant. So i think the plastic bearings are shot. I’m not sure I want to delve into bearing replacement or just swap out the $370 drive spline.
Do you think the over-tightening caused the bearing failure or do you think the tight feeling was a symptom, not a cause?

It looks like the last good conditions for Sonoma RF are on Tuesday, so I’m blocking out some time off work. I’m thinking TC since it’s been awhile but FR is my usual go-to so I’m fine with either. Company welcome.

General Talk / “Say ‘Hello’ to Steely Dan”

This gives that infamous line from Naked Lunch all new meaning.

The lake is still 5 feet from full in mid July. Surface temperature is pretty warm at 80° or more. Launched at 6:30 and had two bass and two trout by 9 AM. After two bass and one trout, I switched to Kokanee and thought I had the biggest Kokanee ever, but it turned out to be a 23 inch trout. it felt like a Kokanee. After 2 more hours of trying for Kokes with no bites, I called it a day.

General Fishing Tips / Petrale Sole
« on: July 09, 2024, 04:11:19 PM »
I’m pretty sure I caught a couple Petrale Sole in Mendo last trip. DFW flatfish identification site didn't even list them, so I was unsure. I caught them on large frozen sardines trying for halibut in about 120’ of water. I released them but should have kept at least one- you can fillet them like halibut to get small clean fillets. I imagine they must be like sand dabs without dealing with the bones. I think bouncing smaller anchovies would probably be the way to go to target them specifically. The larger 19” one fought like a shaker halibut. These seem like a worthy fish to target.

I had some chores to do up at Donner summit so took the long way up and stopped at Bullards Bar. Unfortunately I got a late start and started at 10:20, surrounded by lake lice. I got 1 11.5” Koke after 20 minutes, then nothing. Off the water at noon.
Got the chores done. Ate the Kokanee and headed over to Stampede for a couple hour evening session.  Picked up a nice 14”er soon off the launch and then a couple 12”-13”ers and tossed back a 9”. Marked lots of fish and had short strikes and fish came off, etc. - standard Koke fishing. Lost one really nice one heading back to the launch.
Debated Donner vs Stampede for a quick morning session and decided I was undergunned if I was hoping for a big mackinaw.
At stampede I picked up 3 10” fish and decided to “secure the win” by retaining 2, which was a mistake because I found the 12”-13” fish after that near the dam. Got 7 total with 4 decent ones, retained 5. Tried for trout but no bites. Off the water by 10am.
It’s really difficult to keep Mabel from licking the fish, since that is what she has learned on the ocean, but I don’t want her to get Salmon Poisoning Disease.

AOTY / We should separate crappies from other sunfish
« on: June 20, 2024, 08:54:02 AM »
Looking at the species archive I noticed that crappies totally dominate the panfish category to the point of elimination of other species for contention. Maybe Sac Perch could be lumped with them but I think sunfish should be separate with more points per inch while crappies could get fewer points per inch. It’s too easy to get a 150 pt fish with crappies. A 12” crappie is an average or small one while a 12” bluegill is huge and noteworthy.
This is something that should be considered for next year.

Met Paul and Scott at the lot this am. Met Nowhere Man heading out of the harbor. Winds were calm with a good sized swell. Bait was not cooperating and it took awhile to get a couple mackerel. No action for quite awhile as I bounced around East and then past the red buoy up to lighthouse reef. Wind came up a bit after 10 am but mostly on the outside. At one point traded a 10oz weight for a 13” Greenling - not a fair trade. Had a few other bites and scratched baits but no halibut, no lings, no rockfish ( didn’t really try for RF). Off the water around 12:30. Bite was just not there today.
When I got back my new fish cleaning table had arrived from Basspro. I’ll have to wait to put it to use. Maybe jinxed myself ordering it.
