General Fishing Tips / Re: Halfmoon Bay South Jetty Tips?
« on: April 05, 2024, 10:14:39 PM »
Completely agree with the above commenter with keeping an eye out for the waves crashing. Pretty much from the beginning to the corner (bend) of the jetty is where you'll encounter the wave breaks. If you're stuck out past the bend with a high tide and waves crashing, you can transverse along the side of the jetty closer the water (harbor side.)

For crabbing, I've only seen rock crabs caught. You might be able to find some Dungeness crabs towards the end of the south jetty casting towards the north Jetty area though. Goodluck and safe travels

General Talk / Re: Dill Identification
« on: April 04, 2023, 01:29:27 PM »

From what I can gather all dill/fennel is edible so I might just give this a try. I just need to be on the look out for Poison Hemlock (reddish/purplish stem base and white flowers) and stay clear.

Dog Fennel tho.  Contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, can cause acute and chronic liver damage and can kill you if eaten in sufficient quantity over a sufficient period of time.  Also bioaccumulates.

So no.  Don't eat that without a positive ID.

Thanks for that I will not eat without positive ID for sure. The stems don't have the Fuzz/Hair that I'm seeing with Dog Fennel

Thanks for the help everyone :smt006 I added some more photographs to original post to help identify.

We ended up having some store bought Dill which I compared with. The crushed up dill in question didn't smell bad at all. Smells a bit more of a mild version of the store bought dill, but then again my smell is all over the place.

Bring your camera next time and record  :smt006

A few months back my family got harassed by two individuals while harvesting mussels.  When I came back and was told of the incident, I went directly to said individuals and spit out the facts. His wife went running and dude almost shit his pants  :smt044 Wish I had a camera.

Keep on musseling brother, just keep that camera ready

General Talk / Re: Boccacio strong odor
« on: September 19, 2022, 10:11:42 PM »
Just had some charcoal grilled Boccacio with basil vinaigrette before reading this comment. They definitely do have an odor even when cleaned and iced. You could bag them in a separate bag and store them along with your other catch.  Surprisingly still my favorite rockfish to eat :smt006

I have the same issue even when tail is submerged. Used maybe 4 times and already has issues!

General Talk / Re: Best place to buy ice?
« on: May 31, 2022, 08:42:28 PM »
If you have some space you could fill some Sterilite storage containers with water and freeze overnight. I'd recommend filling the containers to just over half.  Just pop them out just like ice cubes and store them away until needed.   :smt006

Recipes / Re: Sausage Recipe request
« on: March 09, 2022, 02:05:36 PM »
This is a pretty good one I've done a few times.

Kielbasa

Meat 70/30 ratio

1.75% salt
1.75% brown sugar
0.5% black pepper
0.25% Cure #1
0.187% garlic powder
0.125% Whole mustard seed
0.0625% Pickling Spice
0.0313% Marjoram

Rub meat chunks, keep meat almost frozen while grinding.  Small grind plate.

Bind the meat with water
-Pour water into spice bowl to collect spices and pour water into meat and mix.  Want meat to be sticky and clumpy.

35mm hog sausage casing

Pop air pockets

Twist sausage, hang in front of fan

Smoke till ~153 degree

Pour water over to bloom

Tried this recipe as well and good results.

OP if you plan on smoking any sausage don't forget to use cure #1 :smt006

Fish Talk / Re: Lost Halibut?
« on: January 14, 2022, 10:22:09 AM »
There’s a waterway between the lake and slough on the northwest end of the lake.  Could have come in as a smaller fish and become landlocked.  Who knows.

That could definitely be the reason why this halibut (possible more?) is even in there.

I just find it interesting halibut even make it back this far in the bay. Maybe might start trolling for them in Alviso lol
