Body of diver pulled from Salt Point State Park

By GUY KOVNER
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

An unidentified diver's body was pulled from the ocean at Salt Point State Park on Sunday by the Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter crew.

Diver identified in Salt Point State Park drowning
The helicopter, deputies and state parks lifeguards responded to a report of a person floating face down in the water near Horseshoe Cove about 1 p.m., Sgt. Dave Thompson said in a press release.

The diver, wearing a wetsuit, was partially out of the water when Paramedic Scott Westrope was lowered to him on a 100-foot line attached to the helicopter.

Pilot Paul Bradley lifted Westrope and the man to the top of the bluffs surrounding the cove, where the man was determined to be dead, Thompson said.

In a separate incident, just as the mission was completed, hikers reported someone stranded on a rocky outcropping south of Horseshoe Cove.

Two men were spotted on a rock surrounded by rough water, and they were hoisted to shore separately by Westrope and Flight Deputy Chris Lomanto, again using the 100-foot rescue line.

The Santa Rosa men, ages 19 and 20, had been fishing on the rock when the tide came in, cutting them off from the shore, Thompson said.

Gentleman,
If you lament the closing of ling and rockfish today....what better motivation then to take up diving for dinner? :snorkel
 Consider this straight from the rulebook;

Lingcod

The recreational fishery for lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) is open to divers and shore-based anglers from May 15, 2009 through November 30, 2009. The fishery is closed to boat-based anglers as of November 1, 2009 (see important NOTE at the end of this section). Lingcod may only be taken or possessed4 in waters less than 180 feet (30 fathoms) deep. The daily bag and possession limit is 2 fish, with a minimum size limit of 24 inches total length.

Click here for a summary of groundfish regulations.

Cabezon and rockfish all yearf round. :wav:
So,
Go get  a wetsuit and get it on!

For Sale / Cobra Fish n Dive for sale...again. $ 500.00
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:47:00 PM »
Finally,
 I found the Malibu X Factor I wanted !
So....anyone want a Cobra Fish n Dive?
I have been improving it and learned to do rivet work.
3 newly installed handles, 2 seats, 3 flush mounts , a ghetto bar and the big hatch that allows all gear to be stowed away for safer launches and re-entries.

Its caught tons of fish and will enhance your "fishy mojo" to be sure.
$ 550.00 and ready to fish!
 Sincerely,
 Steve in Hayward

Fishing Pics / Largest fish ever taken by hand?
« on: October 25, 2009, 11:27:45 AM »
Yes,
I sneaked up on his back and went for a ride for an hour or more.
Its a giant manta ray from Soccorro Island way offshore  Mexico. 1985.
I have stories from the old days that even I don't believe until seeing old photos.

Hi guys,
I went out with Mike and Keo off Pigeon Pt yesterday and was too beat to write.....Then w/ the shark news off Bean Hollow ...well that was a story that needed everyones full attention.
Funny, I remember passing up Bean Hollow as being too tame that morning and wanted to share some of Mikes crazy adventures off the bird...ie. Pigeon ]

Well, we had a fast drift from stiff South winds. Winds that apparently slacked off before the bean. Having had a great day on Saturday at Jaws...[ 2 lings!] I knew the bite would still turn on and couldn't wait to fish wilder area.
It was 95% paddling and re-paddling because of the drift. Keo said it was supposed to be only 80% paddling and 20% fishing not 95% paddling and 5% fishing.

But...sometimes when you drift off the rocks you pass thru halibut country and I did and had [ for me] the fight and the fish of the year. 3 feet long and 25 lbs...what a rush.
Got lotsa photos but cant find the cable to hook em up this morning.
I will get one today because the 2nd news was the photo documentary of Keo and a serious lingcod!

We had some surf upon re-entry and after Mike and I had arrived safely, we were waiting for "young Fish-talker" ie. Keo to arrive,
He sped to shore as fast on his tarpon as I have ever seen a kayak move....it was so impressive...I mean he was smokin!
Then...he turned and landed sideways to shore and as we were screaming " Get out of the kayak.....get out of the kayak!"
Then as a wave grew and took shape behind him the plea was "Brace! Brace!!"

Then the wave hit and somehow transferred motion via rebounding from beneath him....and ejected him high into the air!
Jai Boi turned into "Rocket Boi!" He flew straight up 5 feet high and made a perfect butt landing into the surging wave.
Meanwhile, the kayak was deposited high up the beach still sideways...erect and with nothing falling out.
It was a "U-Tube moment" and as with the shark incident, no camera was on.
Keo is all passion and as experience catches up, will be a master kayak fisher.

Speaking of masters...Mike has the technique and its rather unique. Thats why he scores while others make excuses.
He catches and then loses more big fish at the surface then he puts in the boat!
He releases fish that others would be proud to make reports out of and despite the low gear-minimalist approach is to be sure one of the safer guys out there.
Skill and confidence on the water cannot be bought except thru endless hours and hours OTW.
Mike...Keo...it was a pleasure...Anytime!

Photos later on today!

Sincerely,
 Steve

Kayaks / Marauder vs X factor
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:45:53 PM »
Hello folks,,
In your experiences,
For big guys ie 275 lbs and 6 ' tall is a Cobra marauder a good option like the Malibu X factor?
Mickfish and Abking both paddle the big stuff. What do you guys and others think?
Steve

Kayaks / Used Malibu X Factor available anywhere?
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:37:29 AM »
I fish and dive off a tuna boat right now...I mean a Cobra Fish n dive.
I'm evolving and feeling more and more comfortable OTW and want more speed to go long rang and retreat faster.
At 280# and w/ scuba tank and weight belt, the options are limited I know.
The wildman from the far North Abking vouches for the factor and thats good enough for me.
Any available?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Bendo at Big Sur
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:36:17 PM »
Hello all you social yakers at Albion!
I ended up all alone again down in Big Sur w/ nothing to do but ...er...fish.
The conditions were wonderful and I scored all the rules allow.
On top of it all was my biggest ling in years. He towed the kayak around and played himself out on my spinning rod. Leadhead jig tipped with squid.
His head was as big as mine and made the kayak noticeably harder to pull up the beach!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Bendo at Beano
« on: July 15, 2009, 05:01:13 PM »
I read where several guys were planning on Bean Hollow for Wednesday.
I failed to read where they also said they perhaps were after all not going.
So, like a dumbass, I showed up all alone.

Now, doing the Bean alone is...as everyone knows, not so recommended.
I thought that maybe since I was early, the rest would come later.
 So...
 Out I went!.

So Malibu two...Scallen ya missed it!
I let a dozen loose and kept the bigger of each species including a big greening and a gopher.
The blacks are in, the ling was a good one and the best eating fish ever, a fat cabezon.
There were whales, dolphins seals, sea lions...and lotsa fish.
The only thing missing was the....the.....you know.

Kayaks / need big kayak
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:57:40 AM »
Hio folks,
I am back from a long absence and am looking to resume the the madness again.
I sold the only yak I ever had [ Cobra fish n dive] and wondered if a different one would do better.
Diving is my primary purpose though so racing and knifing thru the waves to beat you guys to The hotspot ain't gonna happen so a bigger capacity platform is the idea.
However, fishing is also a need and it cannot be a dive platform only.

I wonder if the other big boats ie. O.K. big game or the new Malibu X factor can equal the benefits of the cobra fish n dive. I'm 280 lbs and with tank and fish, abs, water and wetsuit we already exceed the capacity of the normal boats.
Does anyone have a bead on this?
 Steve
