I need to get a new fish finder for boat fishing on Lake Almanor. I'm hoping that someone  who also uses a boat might give me some input.

I had transferred my Humminbird FF from Kayak days to my used boat.  But in the very wet year of 2017, when Oroville Dam almost blew, my RV flooded while stored near Lake Almanor.  While it was being repaired in Redding, my FF was stolen from it.  A friend gifted me a Garmin Echomp Chirp 735V.  I've been using it since then but I want to upgrade to something with better imaging and that can use Navionics charts.

I have been looking at either the Lowrance or Humminbird units:

Humminbird HELIX 9 CHIRP GPS G4N Fish Finder/Chartplotter

Lowrance HDS LIVE 9 Fish Finder/Chartplotter - Amer XD AI 3-in-1

I really haven't had time to study fish finders in depth and I want to take advantage of any sales that might be available at this time of the year. So, I am hoping some of you who have already studied the important considerations involved can give me some advice or pointers on what I should be aware of in terms of the pros and cons of these brands and units.

Thanks,

Doug

Fishing Pics / A Lake Almanor Whopper!
« on: September 30, 2023, 12:06:22 PM »
On September 20th, my friend Wes Morgan, a Camp Wilson veteran fisherman, caught his fish of a lifetime!

Known to be one of the few who routinely gets on the water at 5 AM, he was jigging at Rec 2 using a 2 inch pearl pattern Berkeley Powerbait on the end of a Carolina rig.  At 7:20 a monster struck.  Fishing alone on his pontoon boat, he faced a touch and go battle for 45 minutes.  He was in only about 33 feet of water with a bottom known to be full of tree limbs and other snags.  As is typical of browns, the fish was dashing for the bottom.  Wes described many very taxing moments as the fish made long runs and threatened to spool his light tackle.  Amazingly, Wes maintained enough control to keep the fish out of the snags and certain escape. Quite an accomplishment given that he was only using 4 lb. leader.

He described how difficult it was boating the fish onto the pontoon deck by himself.  He bent over the rail and got the fish halfway into the net with the tail still hanging outside the net.  Sweating profusely, he dropped his rod, grabbed the net with both hands and heaved the fish onto the deck. I imagine it took awhile for his heart rate to drop back to normal.

The fish was 32 inches long and 18 1/2 inches in girth.

It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.  He's been fishing this lake since he was a kid, for 56 years. So, I'd say he's earned this trophy.

In several respects, it's been a strange year for fishing Lake Almanor.  The late close of spring seemed to have upset the ecosystem.  The hex hatch hardly even happened.  Don't know if the extended cold water killed the nymphs off or what.

The transition of the fish from targeting scattered mayflies to pond smelt seemed delayed. When the smelt got large enough, they would drift by in thick sheets on your ff screen, but you couldn't provoke the trout to strike if your life depended on it.  I wonder if the fish are so sated with smelt that they can't be bothered by our feeble offerings. The good news, if this is indeed the case, is that the fish should be getting ever larger. That's not to say that fish aren't being caught, but the amount of time and effort per fish seems to be significantly increased.

Another unusual finding was the relative lack of seeing agonal pond smelt on the surface after they were stormed by marauding trout. Usually seeing the diving gulls sipping the carnage off the surface was a fairly common event--but not this year. I don't know if the fish have become such proficient hunters that they scarf up all the smelt, never letting them float to the surface.

Now, as the season closes, we expect to see bevies of several hundred grebs over the deeper water, tracking and diving for the swarms of smelt.  But this year they are very few to be seen.

Still, it's been a good year on the lake.  The weather has been nice, relatively warm and calm for this time of the year as we all prepare to close up and head for home.

I haven't posted for a long time, but I was trying to see if I could find the thread regarding the shark attack that Fishunter experienced years ago.  In particular I was trying to find the video that someone made after the attack when Fishunter paddled up to a pod of kayakers.

It seemed that he is no longer on the site now so I couldn't post him.  Wonder if someone else might still have that video on file.

Thanks,

Doug

Fishing Pics / Almanor's Autumn Colors

I don't post much anymore since a shoulder condition has prevented me from paddling.  But I thought I'd let you see that it's not only the trees that are turning gold at Lake Almanor.

General Talk / Lone Survivor--A salute to all who have surved
« on: January 10, 2014, 10:17:32 PM »
Just left seeing "Lone Survivor".

I am reminded of my residency days, training with Viet Nam combat Vets in the VA Hospital.  When I led groups and heard them recount their combat experiences, I was convinced that I could never have endured what they had to go through.  In 1971, my lottery number was 71, though accepted to med school, they had stopped college deferments, so I would surely have gone to Nam.  Only the end to the draft that year spared me. I wondered if I could have survived even a week.

As I left viewing Lone Survivor, a deep sense of gratitude and respect for those who have served welled up within me.

To Frank (frankfishing) and all those survivors...I salute you!

Doug, this is still one of the coolest solutions/inventions ever! I think we should test it on the Moss salmon soon.

Sincoast's recent post reminded me that I still have an old project that I need to finish off.  After my first attempt, I decided I didn't like the aesthetics of having a big old gearmotor hanging off the reel.  So I got an old Japanese electric reel off Ebay and fiddled with it.  I had some problems getting the electronics to run smoothly and since my fishing up at Lake Almanor wasn't requiring a downrigger, and since Salmon season was dead, I let the project die for awhile.  But I may have to get back to it soon.

I also reworked the remote control transmitter unit.  The initial one stuck too far off the paddle shaft and I wanted it to be as low profile as possible--aesthetics.  Plus I had to rework the battery compartment design so it was fully water proof.

Thought a few who viewed version 1 ( http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,17749.msg321002.html#msg321002), might like to see the new model.

Thought I could cut across from Shelter Cove to Red Bluff to Almanor.  But I heard Hwy 36 was a very windy road so I ended up traveling via Ukiah and Clear Lake to Red Bluff and it took nearly six hours.  We got in camp after 9:30 PM on Sunday.

Yesterday was cold, rainy and windy so I just rested up but today I got out on the water for the first time.  Just about had the whole lake to myself it seemed.  It was a bit windy and the bite was slow, but I did manage to get a nice 19.5 inch brown for dinner tonight,

Fish Talk / Salmon Season??
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:45:32 PM »
Maybe I missed the announcement as I haven't been online much.  Is it confirmed that the salmon season will be closed this year?  A patient of mine told me today that he just heard that is the case but I couldn't find anything to confirm this. Only a few gloomy forecasts:
