General Fishing Tips / Re: Yosemite fishing advice
« on: November 07, 2017, 05:50:44 AM »
It has been +10 years, but backpacking I would toss panther martins (black, red on black, or yellow on black) into any small stream and catch small browns.  I fished up by Bridalveil, and Tuolumne Meadows

I am willing to mod, CUP holder ok, and yea I would think some kind of jigging/rigging would make a fit into the cup holder.
I should have attached a full view  -  responses so far, good points that accessible, not in the way.
Perhaps one of the rod holders?
I have not taken this vessel out yet, tomorrow, and will before doing any mounting - this advice much appreciated!!

NewB to downrigging, and pedal drive.  I have 4 locations that I think make sense for mounting my Scotty downrigger.  I want it removable.  Where would you mount - A, B, C or D?  Or other location?  I think 'D' works best.

I am right handed, does that matter?
Best to have it slightly behind (out of the way)?
Best to have it beside (right next to me)?
Best to have it in front of me (slight lean to deal with it)?

Not saying there is a relation, but there is an entry at the bottom of the crime reported list from Auburn CA.  Would be smart for the buyer to run a serial number check before exchanging money for goods...

I just returned from family camping at DL Bliss where they home based the search effort.  Very impressive - lots of people and tons of equipment and boats out looking for this guy.  For 3 days I watched many many people taking part in the search (Placer County, Coast Guard, Air Force, search and rescue volunteers, El Dorado Co).  Yesterday an Air Force team from Monterrey sent out 2 groups of 5 divers each, plus 2 deep water divers, searching down to 100'.  They mentioned the challenge of conducting such a search between DL Bliss and EB because of the steep granite shelf and deep waters at that part of the lake.  The report they shared was they know he did not make his destination, he left during high winds, no boat/possessions found, no witnesses, his car was found at the launch point.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Hobie Vantage CT seat repair

I cracked the front of my boat, reviews raved about this stuff for boat repair (I have mentioned it before on some other thread).  It cost $40, expensive for epoxy, but did the job.  Since there was more in the tubes I attached a some sheet metal to act as a skid plate to the rear allowing my boat to drag the concrete dock at launch and not chisel away my tupperware boat plastic.  Works great.  Before adding the metal, I laid down some fiberglass into the epoxy which worked also, but metal is metal.  So in your case, bring both sides together, glue in a bridge support of some fashion (ie- sheet metal strip) and lay down the epoxy.  Follow the instructions- applying heat before applying the epoxy really makes this stuff bond two sides together well.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Trout Lures
« on: October 28, 2016, 02:20:42 PM »
Panther Martin rig -- I experience major line twist, cumulative with each cast.  I have tried barrel swivel with a 12-18" leader to the PM, but it really jacks up the action.  What do you guys do about line wind up after 1+  hour of casting, or do you have a better way to avoid it?

Jigging -- man I am bad at this.  I cant keep my boat/sonar over the lure using freehand paddle to achieve Clayman's arcade fishing (helpful when spotting fish).  Next, I struggle knowing how far to cast to reach bottom depth before starting the art of 'jigging' which in my case becomes a low depth retrieve.  Do you guys cast out high and short, let drop?  Or manually unspool beneath the boat?  I am still practicing this, it has obvious potentially I cant wait to experience.

Thanks - and great thread by the way!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Trout rod/reel recommendations?
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:03:12 PM »
Yea, same, wanted to gear up, all I have is bass gear.  I headed to BassProShops on Sunday after reading BPS reviews.  I decide on smaller Shimano Sedona FE Series Spinn reel ($69), paired to a 7' Ultra Light Ugly Stick Elite ($49), 4lbs CX Premium CFC line ($8).  The reel is so smooth and worth the extra $10 over BPS brand reel I had intended to buy- one nice reason to visit their display.

I fished yesterday in the Sierras, Freely Lake shoreline, and Lindsay Lake by kayak (will get a report up tonight).  Overall I was impressed.  I was throwing nothing larger than 1/4oz spinners and spoons and the lure would fly incredible distance.  I never had the precise control I am used to with stiffer rods.  Bailer engages with no effort.  Several cast the rod tip would sometimes flop around almost noodle like, my cast not all that imperfect, but not on target either.  I have never fished a 'light' rod of any kind, so I remain uncertain if it was me, the rod, or combo.  But I loved effortless tossing these little lure all over the lake.

Would I buy again?  Reel and line, no question.  But I would shorten the rod.  My kayak is 10' sit inside, and when my lure got tangled/twisted around my rod tip (seemed to happen easily with 4lb line) I had a rough time extended my rod base to the front of the kayak, trying to keep it out of the water, so I could untangle the lure from the casting floppy/flimsey rod tip.  Some times it was just easier to cut the line, forget about trying to unwrap the lure 'x' number of times.  6' rod length would make this easier on me.

General Talk / Re: School me "buying a new car"

+1, +1 again, on hertzcarsales (I bought 2 this year from them), a Corrolla S and Camry S model, each had 35k miles.  They release +90% of their rentals to Carmax and action, but only those cars that do not pass their quality inspection, leaving the ones they sell from hertzcarsales as their best inventory.  No haggle price, my research found they beat all other like model sales by $3-4k.

I copied this idea, but my mod was I needed the transducer to be removable (b/c I use it on 2+ vessels).
http://www.hammerheadkayaksupply.com/duct-seal.html

At home depot, in the plumbing section, I found this rubber grommet thing I think is made to go around the base of a 3-4" pipe that would come out of the ground.  It is very pliable, which I needed b/c I mounted it inside the kayak where the left half and right half meet (it makes the "V" so point is not flat).  I use Duct Seal putty to attach that grommet to the kayak.  Duct Seal is in the Electrical isle, it is about 6"x2" brick wrapped in white packaging- very dense, pliable, and sells for ~$5 I think.  It does a great job remaining firm, and pliable, watertight for this purpose.  When I hit the water, I drop my transducer in with 1-2 cups of water and it works great (temperature is accurate).

You can repair it for about $40 - really!  This stuff is great - to promote the product they chainsaw a kayak in half, glue it back to together.

Safety First / Man saved from dying at Folsom Lake

"...two men were on a boat at Folsom Lake Friday and were dredging for a plane that had crashed during the 1960s.  For unclear reasons their boat overturned during their operations"

Inland waters, can I assume VHF radio could have prevented this?  I started carrying one this summer, thinking I wanted it for cold water emergencies among other reasons.
