For Sale / GONE,,,Free Golf clubs and accessories
« on: May 03, 2017, 02:47:21 PM »
I don't know a thing about golf, these were my Dads, he had them custom made probably back in the 90s. As I understand if they were custom made for him when he was in his 70s they would be for someone who was jst starting out or just didn't have a very powerful swing.  He was 6ft even.

Come with folding cart, balls, tees and few other thigns like that.  Even size 12 golf shoes,

In Martinez

Recipes / If you Nuke (microwave) potatos
« on: March 10, 2017, 10:11:50 AM »
I eat a fair amount of potatos, especially fried, but like to precook to cut down on time. I used to wrap them in plastic wrap and toss'em in the nuker to cook them, then chop and fry to brown for that caramelized goodness.

A few years ago news came out that nuking in plasticware wasn't such a good idea and I have enough chemistry in my background to know that they were right so I started trying to nuke stuff in glassware.

I had a hard time finding glassware just the right size for one potato so I started dropping one into a coffee cup and covering it with a little pyrex saucer. Then of course one day the saucer fell off the cup, bounced out of the nuker, broke on the counter and splashed broken glass all over the kitchen.

Crap, so I just continued with nuking that one without the top. Hmm, it worked just as fast as without a lid.

Since then to nuke a potato, I just drop it into an appropriate sized coffee cup (no lid) and set it for about 2/3 the time you'd expect and it works great. Quickest and cleanest way I've found to precook them taters.

General Talk / Sea Forager's Guide by Kirk Lombard
« on: October 26, 2016, 10:26:59 AM »
I just figured this was worth a bump.

I've got no skin in the game but this book is a gotta have if you're into California North Coast Saltwater food gathering which most of us are. Besides being full of info, Kirk's style comes thru on almost every page, fun to read.

So I'm just suggesting you get yourself a copy you'll be glad you did,

And just in case you missed it, it's already been discussed here in Big Jim's thread http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=74981.msg854084#msg854084

AOTY / AOTY Sturgeon pts/inch question
« on: October 17, 2016, 06:48:12 PM »
A few years ago DFW changed the regs on sturgeon, went to a single barbless hook, banned snares, changed the slot to 40" to 60" (from 46 to 66) and changed the measurement from total length to fork length.

With the shape of a sturgeons tail a 66" tail length fish is gonna be pretty much the same size as a 60" fork length. And pretty much the  same for the lower end 46 total length vs 40 fork length.  The reg change didn't much change the size of the fish in the slot, just the slot numbers and how you measure the fish.

I looked back in AOTY history and it looks like the 3.75 pt/in didn't change with the reg.

So for arguments sake let's say I caught a top of the slot 60" fork length fish my point total would be 225.  But (same fish) under the old reg would be about 66" (total length) and yield 247.5 points.

Seems to me the pt/in should have been adjusted when the reg changed.

At this point in time everybody IS EQUAL so my 60"sturgeon will equal the same number of points as your 60" sturgeon,

BUT for historical continuity that fish is pretty much equal to a 66" total length fish but now yields less points just because the measurement method changed (not the actual size of the fish).

With all that said, did I miss something, am I mistaken and am I the only one that cares?

And NO at this time I do not have a sturgeon to enter.

Under the old regs the max pts for a sturgeon would have been 247.5 now it's 225. My suggestion for historical continuity would be the change the pts/in from 3.75 to 4.125 (or so) so that the max points available from the top of the slot fish is the same as it used to be.

I thought about suggesting total length for AOTY sturgeon entries but that gets away from the DFW regs and that's just a can of worms.

General Talk / Compilation of DFW reg. questions and answers
« on: May 21, 2016, 01:37:31 PM »
This is a compilation of many (all?) the questions and answers that DFW has put out over the years, in Carrie Wilson's blog.

Many of the questions are just stupid but some are pretty good.  A few directly address gifiting which is why I was looking after browsing Darius's Stupid question post.

General Talk / Marine Grade Oils and Greases
« on: May 15, 2016, 02:41:39 PM »
Every so often I see a question about which lube to use for everything from outboard gearboxes to trailer bearings, to reel lube.

I worked in the oil industry for 40 years and back in the late 70s worked with a bunch of old lubricant research chemists.  They explained that marine grade lubricants contain an additive that has an affinity for metallic surfaces that actually excludes water from being able to reach the metal. All this happens on a molecular level.

Back then I worked in the lab where we tested the marine oils and from that experience I can tell you it works. The test consisted of taking a polished steel shaft and immersing it into a mixture of oil and a small amount of salt water. The oil was warmed and the shaft was rotated for 3 days.

After 3 days the shaft was removed and "read". If the oil had the right amount of additive the shaft would still be shiny and clean with maybe a speck or 2 of rust.  On oils where the additive wasn't there the shaft would basically come out looking like a turd.

Oh yea,,,,,,we used to call it "blue grease" sound familiar?

General Talk / A danger to dogs when fishing
« on: April 06, 2016, 10:44:52 AM »
I was just browsing thru the GSX thread and reading the blurbs about dogs.

It brought back a memory from 50 years ago that is still just as possible today as then.

When I was about 10 we were fishing at a lake in the Sierras, just bait fishing for trout.  There was a family not too far from us and we heard the kids screaming and crying so we ran over to help, not knowing what to expect.

We found a puppy flopping around with line coming out it's mouth. They had baited up with salmon eggs and laid the rod down and the puppy had immediately chowed down the bait hook and all, so it was basically gut hooked and in pain.

Last we saw of the family, they had cut the line and were headed to find a vet.

The thought of it turned my stomach then and still does 50 years later.

Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

Places to Launch and Camp / Salt Pt Woodside campground
« on: March 12, 2016, 08:43:23 AM »
Last year there was some commentary about the Woodside campground not reopening this year leaving only Gerstle Cove campground.

Bummer, Woodside is so much nicer place to camp than Gerstle Cove, I called up there in the fall but couldn't get any info.

Good News though,   Today I got this in my email,

Salt Point State Park
(Sonoma County)
Saturday, Mar 26, 10am-3pm
Help prepare the Woodside Campground for opening by clearing leaf and tree debris, and repairing picnic tables, storage lockers, and fire rings. Kids 12 and up welcome with a legal guardian. Free tent camping in a group-setting on 3/25 and 3/26.

Fish Talk / Grass Shrimp, an interesting article
« on: March 09, 2016, 03:30:06 PM »
Grass Shrimp are pretty much non-existent in bait shops this year and I've heard that the outlook for later on isn't good.

This article is 14 years old, but it echos what I've recently heard about the screwed up salinity due to drought and delta pumping, leading to the current scarcity of shrimp.

It's long but a good read, (if you like that kinda stuff)

General Talk / Pulling up that anchor
« on: January 31, 2016, 02:21:34 PM »
I don't fish much lately but when I do I fish on the anchor allot, sturgeon, striper, shark, even catfish.

On those outings I feel like the most hazardous time is when I pull the anchor in deep water with a fair current.

The way I do it the line is in my hands and I end up pulling the yak broadside upstream against the current and many times the wind waves as well.

Once the anchor comes off the bottom it's all good but until then in a strong current it's a little rocky.

I've thought about some of the river anchor setups where it comes in and out right off the stern but with QRAS in mind and long rodes it just doesn't seem like a better idea for the anchoring I do.

Any advice or comments?

General Talk / Disposable Handwarmers
« on: November 17, 2015, 02:27:30 PM »
My hands are cold from November to May,  even went to the doc about it, he says nothing I can do about it, my body is just over sensitive to limiting blood flow to extremities in cold weather.

Anyhow I found an old pac of MYCOAL/Grabber hand warmers, says Validity Date 1999.

They are activated by just air and these were 16 yrs old at least. So I opened one just check, figured even in their plastic pac they'd be shot by now, but no,  still works,

Another item to carry for sturgeon fishing.
