Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: Port of Sacramento report

I used a 7 wt. rod with a Type VI sinking line.  Then just a 6' leader around 3x.  With this size of the fish being caught you could probably go with a lighter rod.  I also tried a popper on top to hopefully entice an LMB to come out and play, but no luck.  Not sure if this is a workable strategy in this area, but one can hope!

Kayak Fly Fishing / Port of Sacramento report
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:11:49 PM »
Fished the Port of Sacramento from the barge canal access this morning and had a pretty good time.  Got on the water ~6:30 and for the most part paddled on a sheet of glass.  Ended up boating 3 schoolie sized striper all caught on a green and white clouser.  Got off the water around 10.  All in all a great morning.

Some observations:

- Never experienced a striper boil until today.  Me likey!
- Got up the courage to try using an anchor for the first time.  Now I know, once you go anchor, you don't go back (or forward for that matter!)
- Fly fishing is a fun way to hook up with the fish, but I got killed by a bunch of dudes dropping sardines to the bottom.  Cool guys (even offered me a beer!) and I'm glad they did well.  I think the count was up to 40 when I left them.
- Homemade PVC carts are the bomb... once you glue all the connections together.  Got to the top of the ramp and dumped my yak when the cart decided to go to pieces.  Gear everywhere.

Thanks for the advice, was a fun couple of hours.  Report in the fly fishing section.

Hey y'all, Planning on hitting the port of Sacramento launching from the Barge Canal access in the morning (~6am).  First time out in the area so any advice would be appreciated.  Company welcome.

Lately I've been making a few evening trips to the mouth of the American after work drifting minnows for Stripers with good success.

Was trying to figure out where to launch to get at this water and figured the Campus Commons area would be a good spot.  Is there another way to do it without having to pay for access?  Are the striper even up that far yet?

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: Delta Meadows Report

We launched from Delta Meadows River park in Walnut Grove.  Basically come south on River Rd. and make a left on Levee Rd. (just before you cross the connector channel).  You should see a sign for the park on your left.  Head up the dirt road about 1/2 a mile to the launch ramp.

Not sure if we made it all the way to delta meadows slough from here, but it seems to have plenty of fishable water.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Delta Meadows Report
« on: May 16, 2010, 09:14:40 PM »
My brother and I fished the Delta Meadows section out of Walnut Grove on Saturday and had a blast.  Got out there a little late (9:15) but managed to be the only ones at the ramp.  It was the first time out on the yak this season for me and first time in a yak for him so the launch was pretty shaky, but we were able to keep dry for the most part.  The day started great in that we caught 2 bass in our first couple of casts.  We then spent the rest of the day pulling up weeds and finding creative ways to get our flies out of the trees.  All in all, not a very productive fishing outing, but still felt great to be on the water.  Now, some notes:

1) Fly fishing from a tandem requires a lot of trust in your fishing buddy, and when that fails cat like reflexes.

2) Had no clue that the tide currents could be that strong.  Many times I felt like I was swinging flies for steelhead.

3) Sun block is a good thing.  Forgetting to put on the sunblock is a lesson I will only have to learn once.

4) Either get there really early or plan on fishing later.  I think the two we caught were part of the morning shift, and we were to tired and sun burnt to make it to the evening bite.

Was thinking about checking out little Frank's tract and was wondering where people park?  Looking at the Google street view image, is it possible to park at the end of Bethel Island Rd. and launch the yak right there or is the bank too steep?

Yeah I picked up a copy of Fly Fishing the CA Delta book by Mike Costello, which is pretty much what lead me to this board :-D.

Thanks for the advice on party boats, I'll do my best to be visible out there.  Now all I need is some free time to put all this knowledge to good use!

Any info on places in the north delta?  I've read good things about the bass action around Terminous on 12 or the Meadows by Walnut Grove but would love to hear first hand accounts.

Thanks for all the info everyone... so many places to fish, so little time....

Sure, the website is found here:

http://www.cosumnes.org/

From what I have heard it's more of a small mouth bass fishery (which is cool with me, those suckers fight hard!) but from looking at maps it seems one could get out to the Mokelumne and go for stripper as well.

I spent last season learning to paddle on the lakes (mostly Folsom and Camp Far West) and am now trying to find places that have less powered boat traffic.  It's embarrising to get sea sick on a lake  :smt011.

Hello,

Been lurking on this site for awhile now and finally found something to contribute.  I ran across this article while doing some research on where to try fly fishing from a kayak.

http://www.flyfisherman.com/content/bass-without-gas

Looking to give the Meadows slough out of Walnut Grove a shot whenever I get a day off.  Was also thinking of bringing my fly rod to a Cosumnes nature preserve paddle that the family wants to do.  Any tips or warnings about these areas would be appreciated.

Thanks!
