Hi guys I have a friend who wanted to kayak the Sac River for salmon but we have never done this. Is the river calm enough to paddle upstream? We went in spring when the shad were running and there is no way this old man can row up stream. This would be around Freeport just south of the city. What kind of setup should we start with. Were thinking 20# test with some sort of spinners and I guess no weight? Also what about hooks? 1 hook, barbless what about treble hooks?
Any input is appreciated.

Paddling up stream is some work still. You can jig using single or treble hooks with barbs

OK thats what I figured I cant row up stream period. Its jigging or we start upstream and drift downstream and leave a 2nd truck at the destination point.
Thanks

Watch the tides and time it right. Incoming doesn't push that hard in Freeport but will make it easier to paddle. You can catch the incoming and go up and ride the outgo back to your launch point. Me I paddle so I drift and just cast out to save my strength.

That's the best bet. That's what me and my friends do

I am really supersized you are saying the tide gets up that far in the river? Wow that is something I did not have a clue happens all the way up to Freeport.
I will look into that.

I've done the drift from Miller Park to Garcia Bend park. It was years ago. Caught one salmon while trolling.

Have fun,
Al
