I hope you have a great time!  Loch Lomond is my favorite lake, and I grew up just a couple miles from it in Lompico.    And it's the first place I ever fished from a kayak.  Great to go on a weekday, no where near as many boats during the week.  Some tips for you!  Get a worm blower and some worms, you will be glad you did.  I have done fairly well for the stocked trout on just inflated worms, generally limit all summer long when the lake is well stocked.  But I have since used all kinds of power baits, and believe they all work well too.

When trolling there, I had best luck on Rapala diving/suspending crank baits for the 9-20ft depth range.  Haven't caught a thing yet there on flashers, but am going to give it a try this weekend again anyway (camping memorial day at big basin, fishing LL).  Bring your Bass stuff too, plenty of them being caught while I lazily fish for trout.  I generally have the best luck going away from the damn to the nice wide area past the island, fishing the coves, and down the middle of the lake when trolling. Good luck, and report back on your trip!  I'm eager to hear how it will be for me this weekend :)

Well, took another look at the transducer info on the site:

"Portable transducers mount on the transom or side of most smooth surface wood, aluminum or fiberglass boats. A heavy duty suction cup provides temporary installation and holds the transducer at trolling speeds only. 15ft cable and hardware included."

So I don't think it would stick on the outside of my kayak and stay there. Was thinking that this would mount inside the yak.  But then I read a bunch on the puck transducers, and understand that is what is needed and (duh) why the pool puck method looks so popular!  Maybe I'm unrealistic, but seems that one could be made some day to fit a scupper hole or something ;)

I have been looking at fish finders, still have no clue what I want :)  But I ran across this one from Hummingbird that has a suction cup transducer?  My first thought was, hey, must be for guys that don't want to go through the trouble of mounting a regular transducer.  But then I thought more like, What? is this the perfect kayak transducer?  I also like the idea of the battery pack being built in.  Though I have no idea how well it works, I wonder if anyone out there has given this guy a try.

Sounds good to me!  Ill pm you my number and we can figure out a location.  Thanks!!!

You might be able too :)  I just dont know how to get there, or how long it would take me to get there from SJ.  I live in the south of sj, Almaden area.  What time would you want to leave, to be there/launch by?

Well now Capitola does sound good now.  But I did years ago rent a kayak in SCH and don't remember it being too difficult to get out there.  I do not however have a GPS, but do have a flag, airhorn, radio, whistle.  Could probably make it to REI tonight to get a light for the yak.  My buddy and I are still very tempted to go, but yeah without a gps, or depth finder I am not sure we should venture out alone.  If anyone else was definitely interested in showing two newbies around we would be willing to head out there.

Was thinking of going out of Santa Cruz harbor for my first trip out to RF tomorrow.  Anyone interested?  Sat looks better than Sun for weather, yet not "perfect".  Are these conditions "ok" for fishing?

Sat
NW winds 10 to 20 kt. Wind waves 2 to 4 ft. NW swell 6 to 8 ft at 7 seconds and S 2 ft at 14 seconds. Patchy fog.

Sat Night
NW winds 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. NW swell 6 to 8 ft. Patchy fog.

If it is indeed foggy in the morning, are you required to cary a light on your yak for visibility?  Dont have one yet, but I hear REI has a sale this weekend, and I remember seeing one of the yack running lights there for around 20-30 bucks.  Wondering if I should pick that up.

Was also considering Capitola or Stillwater, but I would like to skip on the surf launches for this trip. (need more experience)  Any other reccomendations for a ramp, harbor launch close to SC?

JEZZZZUS.... I didn't notice the "tiny" yaker in the middle there till you pointed him out. Now I don't feel crazy at all!

You know, I think Loch Lomond gets the short end of the stick when it comes to stocking.  Other places like Shadow Cliffs are stocked I believe independently, as well as DFG.  My first few trips out the Loch Lomond this year were similar to your experience.  IT is a beautiful lake, which I love to visit many times during the summer.  For the last 4 years I have been there opening day each time, and the opening days were dismal at best.   But later in the summer it seems that stocked trout are indeed plentiful enough.  Taken limit many a time there from the shore.  I just wish they were open all year round, and stocked more than every three weeks.  This jewel of a lake use to be un-heard of by most, but it has been quite crowded in recent years.

10315
Ah, shows what I know.  Hope you have fun out there!

10316
I guess I am out for this weekend.  Should the weather die down, maybe go somewhere closer to home.  I canceled my reservation for Friday night btw, if anyone wants to get in and reserve it.  Unfortunately reserveamerica.com keeps the transaction fee's, so for 27.50, only getting back 13 bucks.  What a rip!

Took me like 2 minutes to search for this on the net.  Kinda far from Santa Cruz though.

Well!  We went to Bean Hollow.  Mostly because I didn't realize how far LM was from BH, and by the time we arrived at 9AM, it didn't look too bad, and we heard the reports further north looked worse, and wind was gaining strength.  This is how it looked when we got there:

We only went out twice, the launch was not difficult, even for my first time.  And we powered through beyond the rocks, and maybe a few hundred feet into the open water.  A few times on the way out my yak was being jerked to the right, and took several paddles to straighten out.  Guessing thats the current pulling me around.  But once we were in the swells, I felt nice and stable, and enjoyed the view for a few minutes.  We turned around went right back in, where around half way into the cove it seemed like I couldn't get the yak to go forward at all, like the sea wanted to drag me backwards.  But a wave came along and took me side ways, I leaned in and rode it for a little while then straighted out, feeling pretty good about not flipping when the first wave took me.  Then a second one came and I guess I didn't lean enough, and I was dumped for my first time.  It was far shallower than I thought, and I was at standing depth already.  Flipped over my yak, and handed it off to my friend to pull in for me, while I walked out of the surf.

Second time I wanted to see what it would be like with the pedals in place.  The waves were a bit bigger than when we first went out, and I decided to just do a loop in side the cove.  Launch was fine, got my pedals going, and rode out to the middle, did a turn, and tried to pedal/paddle back in.  I got tossed, I think because when your feet are in the pedals, your angled back a lot father in your seat, and I felt a wave come over the back of my yak, and I was dumped again.  Flipped over the yak, let a couple waves carry me tward the beach, and walked out on to the beach dragging my hobie.  Lost my beanie, but nothing else.  Quite an experience to say the least for me :)  I enjoyed everything about it, even the swim.  And though my first trip out was no more than 30 minutes, I am hooked and cant wait to go again.  It was awesome!

I will say that upon reflection that if for some reason I got dumped out of the yak while past the mouth of the cove, it could have been a much worse experience trying to either get back in the yak or swim past the rocks and such.  So I would not recommend it, unless its a calm day.  No way I would go at this alone for any reason.

Some pic's as well:

Thanks for all the advice guys!  Yeah, I am feeling like LM is more and more a better choice for first time, and BH a good place to hone the skills learned at LM.  Updated forecast for tomorrow shows:

NW winds 15 to 25 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. NW swell 5 to 7 ft at 10 seconds.

When launching from either area, a NW wind should help carry us through the surf, but be a pain to get back in right?  It should be easier to head back to shore with a longer target as well.  Hope its a bit less windy in the morning.  Taking my water ski life vest instead of my fishing one for a bit more flotation.  Will also probably start out without the mirage drive (pedal system), though would also like to know if its easier to get back in to land with it.

Will bring a camera, and hope to have something to share when I get back.
