Greetings!

I am a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and am working on a project that analyzes the geographic variation in growth rates, age, and sex of Canary Rockfish along the US West Coast.  We are looking for a crew of anglers to come and help us collect canary rockfish for this project aboard the New Sea Angler with captain Rick Powers out of Bodega Bay.

I am looking for 10-12 volunteer anglers to help with sampling on January 22nd, 23rd, and/or the 24th, but it is all dependent on weather. The plan is to meet at the Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center around 6:30AM for a departure time of 7:00AM and we will return to port around 3:00PM.

The goal is to head out to Cordell Bank and other fishing sites based on Rick's recommendation to collect 100 canary rockfish total across all sample days--Also, we will be fishing deep and shallow! (150-300ft), so please prepare accordingly. Weights and shrimp flies will be provided but we ask that you supply your own rods.

Unfortunately, we won't know if the trip is a go until a couple of days before. If you are interested in coming along, please respond with your dates of interest and a phone number to contact you with.

Thank you!
Rachel

The locals in Loreto BCS called this a Dog tooth snapper.  Anybody know its scientific name?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Lithium Batteries
« on: December 13, 2017, 04:03:13 PM »
RacinRob posted on the Wilderness Systems lithium battery for fish finders and GPS on 12/2 or so.  I'm looking for advice on lithium batteries for powering electric trolling motors.  I found two online apparently worth researching:  Seethroughcanoe sells a 50 AH for $669.99 and Waterblade sells a 50 AH for $349.  (Pdfs attached)

Anybody have experience with either of these?  Or have another recommendation?

I've attached my kayaking/fishing guide and a river mile map.

Flows on the Lower Tuolumne River have been between 3,000 and 18,000cfs since January 2nd and are finally dropping down. Flows should level off at 330cfs by Thursday September 21, making the river safe and fishable from La Grange to the confluence of the San Joaquin.  A pulse flow intended to attract adult fall run Chinook will be prescribed by USFWS, NOAA and CDFW and is tentatively scheduled between October 18th and 26th.  Flows will likely range between 400 and 1,000cfs during the pulse.  Please read the CDFW regulations http://www.eregulations.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/17CAFW.pdf (page 41) before you put in.

Greetings Volunteer Anglers!
Thank you so much for your interest in the research fishing trips for the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program & UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory! We are very excited for our first year of sampling MPAs in the Bodega Bay area!

My name is Erin Satterthwaite, and I will be Volunteer Coordinator for the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP) & UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory this year. Please join us for our first year of collecting data for fisheries management and the monitoring of California MPAs through catch and release fishing surveys!

The 2017 CCFRP Sampling Dates for Bodega Bay are Sept. 24th- Sept. 29th, 2017! The sampling trips are full-day trips (often departing at 6am and returning to the dock in the late afternoon/evening around 3pm-6pm), although times may vary due to ocean conditions and transit times. Anglers must be at least 16 years of age. All participants must be able to spend extended periods of time (e.g., <12+ hours per day) on a recreational fishing boat, in potentially rough waters. Please note that there will be NO INDIVIDUAL TAKE on these cruises, in accordance with our CA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife scientific collecting permits.

If you are interested in participating, please be sure to fill out the google form linked here to request sampling dates on our upcoming 2017 fishing trips!  If you have a friend who would like to participate with you, they must fill this form separately-- and please feel free to forward this form to any other interested individuals.

Your place on a trip is not guaranteed until you have received a confirmation email from our volunteer coordinator: Erin Satterthwaite. Please wait for this email from our volunteer coordinator for details on your confirmed trips.  If you have any questions about this process or other information, please email bmlmorganlab@gmail.com.

Thank you, and we look forward to a great first season of CCFRP at Bodega Bay!

Best,
Erin Satterthwaite

Introductions / New guy to the site
« on: September 13, 2017, 03:16:10 PM »
I'm Riverwatcher LT and I'm new to this site.  I'm in Turlock so I fish the rivers, Sierra lakes, SF Bay and coast.  I'll be posting a Bodega Bay MPA fishing opportunity as soon as I'm done here.  If you don't see it reply back to my intro.
