Let's help the coast guard out by being proactive? I'm gonna look into where I can get a bunch of stickers. Maybe they can give me a couple hundred stickers to pass out at GSXI? Thoughts?

It's a good idea to save the CG from having to do search and rescue for every abandoned paddle craft, but judging from the comments under that 4.5 year old article the program has some problems.
If you can get the 200 stickers I'll put one in each GS11 bag.
-
The. USCG Aux used to hand them out at ORC. I was told a couple years ago that they stopped the funding for that program and weren't distributing them any more. Hopefully they brought it back. First people to contact would be USCG Aux.
-
Oops, didn't notice the date on the article. My bad!
-
That's a great idea Ryan. I would like one or two. Probably a good idea to hide one in a not so visible spot as well so that if a persons kayak was stolen.

I have one of those stickers inside my 2 kayaks. I got them from a kayak instructor doing lessons at Quarry Lakes over 5 years ago. They are very durable and a great idea.
-
I sent them a couple messages 1-2 months ago and they never responded. I requested a couple hundred and explained to them about NCKA and what/who we are. No response.
-
The Facebook page is inactive for the program. I sent another request to the founding flotilla of the program in Mendocino. Let's see hat happens. I sent the request before to the local flotilla here in Sac.
-
I usually mark my major equipment with my CDL number. Just as an identifier. I will be marking my Yaks with more identifiable info. Is there a location the Coasties prefer?

Same here.
after I had picked up 4 stickers from the CG auxiliary at the salmon fest a couple of years ago . I haven't seen them again.
Great idea, and have them on both of my Kayaks and Banks board.
-
I'm trying to get an avenue of access via the CG Aux here in Santa Cruz. I've done them a bunch of favors, let's see if there is reciprocation.

Some of the pebbled finishes on the kayaks preclude stickers from staying on for any length of time.
-
It's still a good reminder to include your contact info on your boat. I write all my relevant contact info (name, cell number, email address, DL number) with a Sharpie on the inside of the boat inside the main hatch. If you open the hatch, all the info is there staring at you.
This is very good advice for everyone, IMO. Thanks, dtizz.
And thank you, Ryan for posting this up - doesn't matter if the article's old. This is cutting edge stuff actually - we need to be ON this.
John has a good point about the finish on some yaks not accommodating stickers - that's why I like the sharpie idea. But sharpie ink does wear off...
Honestly, when I first reviewed this post and the article my thought was that people should be charged if their aquatic vehicles get loose in public waterways and a search ensues...
This is an all around interesting issue that deserves more discussion and hopefully action. I will definitely stand behind my offer to get them in every GS11 bag if we can come up with 200 of them.
-
Those stickers are damn near bombproof. I wouldn't be too worried about it coming off without some effort on your part.
-
I think I will just make a laminated card and tie it to the battery bag
-
Maybe I can see about getting some made if it doesn't work out with the CG. We order stickers for my company equipment frequently and will make an order soon. I'll find out how much it cost.
Interesting in hearing what those of you contacting the CG find out!
-
The conspiracy theorist in me says, "careful, this is step one toward registration." ..... he's not always wrong....
-
... - that's why I like the sharpie idea. But sharpie ink does wear off...
I use a sharpie to mark some measuring lines on the deck of my kayak. I think sharpie writting inside a hatch it's going to last longer than the kayak.
-

Yeah, and that Hawg Trough Extender will last forever too. :smt003
I used to mark fish lengths on the deck of my yak, but those faded away years ago. The inside of the yak is much different than the outside with so much less exposure, abrasion, direct sunlight...etc., but the inside of MY yak is a pretty rough place in general - I'd give sharpie a few months or MAYBE a year in there.
I like the sound of that 'bomb proof' sticker.
-
I scratched my drivers license inside the hull of my yaks. Its more for proving ownership in case of kayak theft.
-
You can get your kayak and your kids micro chipped at Wally World. Yep, the all in one family package. Its coast guard approved. By the photo dept. Between Tax Preparation and McDoogles. YES.
-
I tried to get those stickers a few years ago with no luck. There is no copyright preventing NCKA from making our own identification stickers.
-
Sharpie then a quick shot of lacquer or clear marking paint and it will last for ever.
-

You drink lacquer?

I prefer a quick shot of whiskey before painting! :smt044

Does huffing spray paint show up on a drug test? Asking for a friend.

I just received an email from the Mendo CG that told me to contact the original CG that started this. Email sent with a request form to get them. The local guy told me he is new to his unit, but did do some research for me. The stuff he sent is old, from 2011, so we will see if there are any decals left anywhere. Sats tuned, I am on it the best I can. Requested for GS, Albion, and another 250 for general distribution at other tourneys.

Nice work - thanks, Rob!

I have the flotilla commander in SC checking this out for us.

Thanks Rob and Bushy and of course Ryan for starting this.

I'm a Coast Guard auxiliarist out of Redwood City. I'd be happy to order some of those orange if found-contact decals for you.
Or contact a flotilla in your area. The Flotilla Commander or materials officer can place the order for the decals from the auxiliary national supply center item 3004a
I'll post again when they arrive they say 3 to 4 weeks but you never know.

That's awesome, thanks! Between GS, Albion and 250 extra we're looking at about 500-600 stickers. I'd be happy to distribute to other groups I'm with too here in northern California and Oregon. I could probably use 100 more for people that aren't on NCKA and/or don't frequent tournaments.
This is a great service to provide the kayaking and boating community and hopefully it saves the USCG resources too!
-
Dang, you guys get things DONE.
Thanks!
-
I requested 650, but have heard nothing yet.
-
The Mendocino Flotilla is the one I originally talked to and he told me to call back east to HQ I think it is. Mend is the one that did the article that we all saw about the stickers.
-
I have been in solid contact with the person who is in charge. I have a minimum of 650 on the way, and most likely an additional 350 too! Eric and Craig have 400 earmarked for their tourneys if they desire them still. I would like to see it a requirement before launching to have these on all kayaks at GS this year.
-
PS. I will have these at all the tournaments and hook ups I attend. I DO NOT want to ship these out once I have them in my possession.

Smart.
And, as much sense as it makes to employ the stickers I think 'requiring' them for a derby launch is a non-starter. (swidt?)
Let the fireworks commence.

Thanks Rob. I encourage anyone involved in the sport to take one of the excellent inexpensive community education courses offed by the UCCG auxiliary. The next paddle sports specific one in Petaluma is Saturday, January 21. The course covers things like reading navigation markers and emergency situations. I recommend it highly and suggest those interested check out the cool Coast Guard auxiliary class finder at this link:

I went with something a little more permanent than the sticker, although I'm sure they stick super good...I made a video of it which can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V5NHcgGGSw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V5NHcgGGSw)
Long story short, it's an anodized red aluminum plate that I laser engraved my emergency contact information onto. Riveted it right behind my seat. Easy to see, and will last for a really long time!
Enjoy!
-
I should be getting some from the santa cruz flotilla soon. I can give a bunch to kayak connection and to mbk for easy pickup.

Hey everyone,
I will have these at GS this week. I will be at the safety meeting with them in hand. Find me and I will give you what you need. I will try to be up by Eric when he is done talking. You can also find me from time to time in the campground wandering around. I will try to keep some on me at all times for distribution.

Thank you, Rob!! Sorry we didn't hook up to get these in the GS bags, but I'll do my best to get the word around that the stickers are available.
Look for these at the Friday safety meeting (5 to 6 PM at the launch) and at the potluck.

You can go to most chain pet stores like Petco or Petsmart and they have vending machines that will print out the Pet Id tags in aluminum like that.
