General Fishing Tips / Re: Pool Noodle Test of Rod/Reel/Net
« on: August 12, 2022, 01:29:40 PM »
You can attach pool noodles as long as you want if you attach it outside your rod and not wrap it with. Do a search on Modified rod float, I made a post on it. Dropped my rod in the blue with this setup no problem with sinker attached. Hope this helps

Sorry that you lost your setups sunsaengneem!  I also learned that the small floaties attached to some of my rods do nothing to keep the rods afloat.  Still looking for a better solution because I prefer not to leash too many things either.

Use longer pool noodles. I think those small ones are garbage

So sorry to hear this, Viktor. Get well soon bro

My only regret was I couldn’t get it in bright color. It was the last one at REI of that size and only had it in Charcoal at that time. Good thing I picked it up b/c they were sold out at other stores

You should totally get it. Chinook was a game changer for me. Those big pockets are a plus. It even has a clip on the back for emergency safety  attachments. I was using the kokatat msfit as well for 10 years and it’s function was somewhat limited. I think no matter which pfd you choose, you’ll have issue with radio or knife getting in the way when reentering, I know I did when I flipped and tried to get back. I just had to change the angle of reentry.

For Sale / Re: Icom M72 Brand new

I have that very same radio I bought per Mooch’s recommendation 12 years ago. It’s been very solid and still hold its charge to this day. Broke the screen during transport (been fixed since) so I replaced it with M73. Now use it as a loaner or a backup in my tacklebox

How do you guys efficiently swim with a paddle though? When I was taking a class in HMB, I got dumped by an offshore wave and got separated from my kayak. It was very hard for me to swim with it (paddle). The instructor had to bring the kayak to me.

I use Big Norm’s Magic fish scaler. I’ve bought different ones in the past and this one is now the only one I use. It doesn’t rust and does a good job at keeping scales from flying all over the place when in use. I like how it’s yellow so it’s hard to lose at the cleaning station.

I use Dakine pads on my Yakima HD bars. Never had issues with rolling. I notice the first set I bought kinda shrunk though. Not sure if that’s a common issue
Did you add extra zip ties to it?
I added one heavy duty zip ties to each one as an insurance in case the Velcro fails while driving.

I see the park opens at 7 am. Is it possible to enter earlier and somehow pay the $7 parking fee, i.e., are there envelopes and a drop box or something?

The gate to the Jetty Day use area doesn't open until Sunrise, sometimes a little earlier. you can line up on the right side of the road prior to the gate. Make sure to leave room for the ranger to drive up and open the gate. You do need to pay at the main entrance.

I think you pay by the boat ramp now. There’s a machine/kiosk there last year we went for salmon. Might have changed, just fyi

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Making a rod float

If you want to use the bigger pool noodle, cut a v-channel along to bury the rod in and finish off with zip ties. Works well with casting setup since the line does not touch the float at all. Use bright colored noodles. They’re easy to spot in case you dump your gears in the water. I use average 1-2ft of noodle.
