General Talk / COVID After Effects
« on: December 27, 2021, 02:15:15 PM »
First of all, I am not here to start a vax/anti-vax debate.  I simply want to relay a warning.
PAY ATTENTION TO WEIRD PAINS after you have recovered from Covid.  I came down with Covid mid October.  It hit me and the wife pretty hard, my son was back to normal in 3 days.  While I was sick, I started developing stomach issues (I have never had stomach issues before). The discomfort led to pain and then debilitating pain.  I ended up having severe clotting in the vessels that provide blood flow to the liver and small intestine.   According to the Dr, blood clotting is becoming a major secondary issue in the weeks following recovery from covid. again, I am not interested in a debate.  This is just a warning.  Pay attention to issues/symptoms that surface after you have recovered from Covid.  I was lucky.  Others have not been.

General Fishing Tips / Locations to crab from shore up the northern coast
« on: November 03, 2021, 07:51:48 PM »
Have a buddy that is taking a few weeks to drive up the North coast and would like to do some crabbing from shore. He is going to start around bodega and work his way north to pretty close to the Oregon border.  Can anyone recommend a few places that he can crab from shore with a pole and snare?

General Talk / Hobie Lynx
« on: July 25, 2021, 10:33:45 AM »
I have an Outback that I use for ocean and lake fishing.  I am looking at the Lynx as a second boat for the wife. Would probably only be a lake boat but she might want to go out crabbing in Bodega when we go there.  Actually looks like it may be a decent platform for crabbing.   Anyone have any experience with these yet?  From what I have read, it sounds like the the shell may be a little thinner than other thermoformed kayaks, like eddyline.  When I am in lakes, I mainly troll for Kokanee and trout so I am a little concerned that the flat bottom will not track very well especially with the downrigger deployed.  And does anyone know of anywhere that may have them in stock?

Craftsmen's Corner / Transport rack ideas for in a toy hauler
« on: April 27, 2021, 01:18:48 PM »
Anyone have some good ideas for transporting kayaks inside a toy hauler?   Currently, I am just stacking them and strapping them down which works but I am sure there a better idea out there somewhere.  DIY or store bought doesn’t matter to me.  Appreciate any input.

Getting my son ready to join me this year and need to buy some more traps.  I am looking at these and wanted to know if anyone has experience using them.  Seem a little less cumbersome than the folding box traps.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Ideas for Securing crab traps on kayak
« on: September 28, 2020, 12:08:35 PM »
Getting ready for crab season. Looking for some ideas on how you all secure your traps for launching and landing.  I tried to search but apparently didn’t use the right words to find anything useful.  Any pics of your setups would be helpful. ( I have a Hobie and an eddy line Caribbean) that we will be taking out.

I am rigging a new kayak and was kind of considering putting a fixed mount vhf and carrying one of the new standard horizon hx40 in my vest as a backup in case I get separated from my kayak. It is tiny and will fit in a pocket. I honestly hate having a handheld on my vest because its always in the way and if I put it somewhere where it is out of the way, I can't reach it very easily because my shoulder range of motion sucks.

I have a 2009 Outback. The rudder will not deploy unless I manually give it a headstart.   It is the older style with the handle that is similar to the turning control handle.  I found a schematic for my model and have tried taking some pics inside the hull to see what is going on but that didn't help much.  Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can get this fixed? I have exactly zero Hobie dealers within a reasonable driving distance.

General Talk / Question for the Hobie experts
« on: December 02, 2017, 07:37:16 PM »
Hey guys, Need some advice from the Hobie owners out there.  I recently scored a ridiculous deal on a 2008 Hobie Outback.  It was owned by an old fly fisherman who used it a few times and decided he didn't like it for that purpose so it sat in his shop for the last few years.  The hull is pretty much mint condition with a few small scratches on the bottom. It has the V1 drive (regular fins) and small rudder.  I am planning on tearing the drive down and giving it some TLC.  My questions are: 1. While I have it apart, should I do any of the V2 upgrades that I see kits for? This drive really looks to have been lightly used so the original parts look pretty good. 2. Is it worth it to switch to the ST or ST Turbo fins? The fins that are on it have no tears and are in good condition.  Will be used in the salt quite a bit but I have recently started to do a lot of lake trolling and will be setting this up for that.  Thanks in advance.

I am hoping some of the WS Prostaffers may have an update on when we can expect some more info on the Pedal Drive that WS announced a few months back.  I have heard/seen/found NOTHING since the video announcement came out. Anyone have anything?

General Talk / Cell Provider Suggestions
« on: August 01, 2015, 10:11:00 PM »
My family and I recently spent two weeks travelling/camping and fishing the north coast from bodega up to patricks point.  We had a great trip but my AT&T phone was pretty much worthless the entire time. Any suggestions? Some said Verizon, some said cellular one is better for more remote areas. I just want something in case of emergencies.

Craftsmen's Corner / Hobie experts/owners.... Need some info.
« on: July 20, 2015, 07:48:38 PM »
I am finally starting my jackson big tuna mirage drive project.  I found this mirage drive on Craigslist in my area.  Can anyone tell me a little about it?  I'm guessing it's an early version. What should I look for as far as issues it my have? He wants 375 which according to threads I have searched seems very steep. What would be a fair price?

General Talk / Need a new VHF....Have Questions
« on: June 11, 2015, 02:27:05 PM »
Hey guys, Wondering if any of you have any input to help me out. I lost my SH HX300 last summer and need a new one. I was going to buy another HX300 but now I dont know. It looks like both the HX300 and the HX290 have optional battery trays to use with standard AA and AAA batteries. The 300 uses 3-AAA and automatically switches to low power (1watt) when powered this way. The 290 uses 6-AA and it doesnt mention that it reduces power output when on standard batteries. How big of a consideration should that be for me? I would like the option to operate on regular batteries because we do a lot of dry camping and don't have access charge the battery outside of running the generator just for that. Second, I seem to remember someone mentioning that they no longer float when regular batteries are installed. I cant find the post that mentioned this. Anyone remember that? Thanks in advance and see you soon.

Hey guys... just left REI a little while ago.  Picked up a Garmin Oregon 600 for 219.  Regular price is 399.99.  None of the other models are on sale.  Great deal if you need one.  Sale ends today. They will order for you of they don't have any on hand.
