Since I will be out of the country Feb 18- Mar 14, I am putting an early shout out for the Gimme Shelter 13 (GS13) Gyotaku Extravaganza Saturday May 18 to put it all on your radars.  When I return, I will be posting more info on how you can participate and/or volunteer. Stay tuned!!

Shameless plug on why I will be out of the country...still fish related!!
Myself along with 15 other freedivers will be representing the USA at the World Freshwater Spearfishing Championships March 9-10 at Lake Taupo, New Zealand.

Hello NCKA!

Yes, another the Gyotaku Extravaganza is happening!  If you haven't participated before and have always wanted to as a participant doing fish prints, as a volunteer or both!, this is the year to join us!  Here are the details for the 8th Annual Gyotaku Extravaganza.

The event will be held on Saturday May 18th following the GS13 tournament from 2:00pm -4:00pm at the campground – it will be held at the kayak/gear wash station near bathrooms. Additional information of the event not posted here will be announced at the mandatory meeting Friday evening.  This event is open to all ages attending GS13.  Children MUST have parental supervision to participate.  NO exceptions!

This event does not happen successfully without the great help of volunteers. I am hoping those who helped me in past will again this year – and of course I am always looking for additional help! More the merrier! This year, I will need 3-4 non tourney people (those who will not be on the water Saturday) to help me from 1:30 though 4:15ish. Volunteers, please PM me your email address so that I can provide you more volunteer info. Thanks!

The plan is for us be ready for all those interested in fish printing by or just before 2:00pm.  Please allow Team Gyotaku the opportunity to fully set up before you come over.

I will have at least three picnic tables for your fish printing creativity.  Provided will be newsprint, fabric paint (black, white, red, yellow, and blue), brushes, and possibly a limited amount of donated white t-shirts (most are very young kids sizes).  Bringing your own t-shirt(s), paper, table cloth, chef’s apron, whatever material you want to print your fish on is highly encouraged. Sponsor a kid with your registration for $20!  Gimme Shelter Gyotaku shirts can also be purchased at the event for $20 while official GS gyotaku shirt supplies last. Donations to offset the material costs are always appreciated!!  The only thing you need to bring is a fish (we will not be providing fish) and the desire to make a print with it.  Please remember to take your fish with you after printing!

Once you have finished your fish print/shirt, we can take a photo of you and your print/shirt to share here on NCKA (optional) and hang your print / shirt to dry.

We will have a fish washing station to rinse the paint off your fish too.

Those who wish to sponsor a kid (15 yr or younger) for $20, sponsored kids will receive an official GS Gyotaku shirts logo’d with ‘Gimme Shelter Gyotaku’. We will encourage them to WEAR their freshly fish printed ‘Gimme Shelter Gyotaku’ t-shirt to the potluck a they will have an opportunity to win a prize!  Sorry, prior years fish printed shirts, blank non GS Gyotaku or the GS shirts that come with your registrations are not eligible.

Let’s get ready to have some fun printing fish!!!!

Questions?!

This event does not happen without the invaluable help of volunteers. I just sent out a PM via NCKA to past volunteers.  If you didn't get a message and want to volunteer - please let me know!  We would love to have you join Team Gyotaku Extravaganza!

Thank you!

Who wants to be on Team Gyotaku Extravaganza?!

Broken record but very true - This event does not happen without the help of volunteers - especially since more and more people come to print fish! Yeah!

Some of my seasoned volunteers are unable to join us this year and some I have not yet heard back from.  Needless to say, I am in desperate need of help for this event.  Yes, you can show up after you get off the water.  Yes, you can leave early to prepare something for the potluck.  We are flexible!  Send me a PM or email me TheGWTC@yahoo.com or call 707-822-4815 to let me know you want to help out.

Thank you!!

Great work, Brandi.  Numbers may be down this year based on how many people are signed up so far.  It's definitely hard to plan an event when you don't know how many people are coming or contributing.  Hang in there, and we will know much more about how many people will attend in 2 weeks.   :smt001

Based on your posts first page, looks like we have a good size group coming to GS - and given the location where we will be holding the event (in front of the campground office) and possibly having some SC community members join in, I am thinking we will definitely need a few more volunteers.

All, if you are interested in being apart of the Gyotaku Extravaganza, please PM me!  Thank you!

Still looking for a few more volunteers!  Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Looks like we may get some rain Saturday but we have an event tent that will keep majority of the wetness off of us.  I am still planning on having the Gyotaku Extravaganza as long as it is not too windy and conditions allow for an enjoyable & creative fish printing experience for all (and my volunteers are still willing).  I will update at the Friday meeting.

See you all at the Cove!

Thanks for volunteering Dave!

Yes, rain or shine the event will happen. Wind, which will not only challenge fish printing efforts but could take out the event tent again, cancels.

Hi Brandi,  my wife helped out a little last year, and said she could help out again this year.

We also have a bunch of various colored/sized blank kids t-shirts.  Would you like us to bring them up in case there aren't enough of the official gyotaku shirts to go around?

I did not have everyone's contact info who helped out last year.  Appreciate you reached out!

It is up to you if you would like to bring blank shirts and take home what is not used.  I believe we only have white blank kids shirts - and maybe on the small side.  Yours would help compliment.

Thanks!
Brandi

A resounding YES!

The Gyotaku could become the centerpiece where it belongs!

I'll be working on negotiating the best possible venue for the fish printing extravaganza!

Looking forward to it!   :smt001

Crash suggests: Id encourage people keeping Friday fish for gyotaku to ikejime their fish to stave off rigor. As I recall fish in rigor don’t make as nice of a print.

See you all there!

Wind nor pouring rain stopped us!   Campground owner Jack allowed us to set up in the Pavillion providing us a sheltered and roomy space to print fish and have room for anyone not fish printing to enjoy their lunch while watching TV.  As the GS tournament was cancelled (good call Eric!), we set up earlier and extended the time for people to create art.  Gratitude goes out to my rock star Team Gyotaku Extravaganza volunteers Christine, Scott, Lawana and Trina all stayed to assist throughout (three of the four volunteers even came over the hill just to help out with this event!) and to Codzilla/Jeff & Hojoman/Howard who bring tables for me to use for the event. And this event is not complete with out participants. All ages of kids showed up from 7 month old to ??? to participate in the event - and art was made! Thank you all for participating! A HUGE thank you to those who purchased shirts and gave donations to help with supply costs to keep this event going!  Finally, thanks to Eric and Jack who are incredibly supportive of this event every year.

If you were not able to join us this year either as a participant and/or volunteer, there is always next year!!

Ever present Hojoman captured most if not all of the participants and their fish prints. Scott, Eric and myself captured some images when we were able.
