General Talk / Re: smog test question
« on: December 30, 2020, 12:20:53 PM »
Amazon sells dongles you can plug into the OBDII port to both read and clear the codes.  If the code isn't cleared, it will just keep coming back.  You might dodge the bullet this way. They are as cheap as $25.  Read the reviews to see what works best for your car.
Used to be auto parts stores could read your code and advice, but then the auto repair shops got the legislators to make it a law that only certified mechanics could do that.  I have a local one here in Placerville that will read codes, advice and clear for free.  I always tip him $20 for his time though.  Best advice I ever get.  Once the problem was the gas cap wasn't tight.  My wife could not twist on the cap until it clicks, so it didn't seal.  I'm sure the dealer service department would have charged her many times more than $20 for that piece of info.  Support you independent auto mechanic and all independent businesses.  They are our neighbors and love to help so long as they can make a living at it.

+1 to that.

I have an older Sequoia and have a great mechanic in Rocklin that I go to.  I support local whenever possible.

I had a check engine problem and the code was an unspecified vapor leak.  He had the car for most of the day trouble shooting the problem and was able to identify the problem through process of elimination.  He didn't charge me anything for the trouble shooting.  (At least 4 hours of labor).  If I had gone to the dealer I would have been out of pocket for an outrageous sum of money.

Introductions / Re: Buying my first kayak

congrats and enjoy the process of finding your first kayak.  Demo it on the water prior to purchase if at all possible.  Online reviews can be a little overwhelming and not always the best.  A test paddle/pedal will help tremendously.  You came to the right place for any advice or to gain some knowledge.  The search feature will be your friend in finding a lot of good information.

On another note, the movie The Peanut Butter Falcon is a pretty good movie about a crab poacher on the run:

Recipes / Re: Crab dip

Sounds tasty.  I will have to try it.

My wife makes a baked crab dip that she copied form Kincaids in Burlingame.

Crab, mayo, artichoke, onion and cheese.  Baked and served on sliced sourdough baguette.  Great for a cold evening.

General Talk / Re: Crab Poach Patrol?!?!

Attach a caribiner to the bucket that has the buoy in it and lower it with a rope that isn't tied to anything but is running through the caribiner?  Instead both ends of the rope are controlled by you so you can control the descent?

Just spitting in the wind, but would it work better if the rope and buoy were in a rubbermaid type of bucket?  (To avoid tangles)  and the lid released  on a timer that others have mentioned?

I'm clueless by the way on the logistics but just think that the tangles will be better controlled if the rope is coiled in a confined space.(and the whales wont got caught in the rope

looks to be a five mile round trip from Rodeo.

someone with actual experience will have a better answer, and give you all of the safety information you will need to make the trip.  All I did was to go to google maps and measure the distance.

Introductions / Re: New kayaker looking for help with delta stripers!
« on: October 23, 2020, 12:58:51 PM »
Got to get colder before the striper really get going. Find whisky slough off hwy 4 near Stockton. Launch from the marina or levy. Pencil popper and other top water gear. Go to where the slough ends into another slough and fish there. You will see them chasing bait. Cast into the swirls! fun as hell!!! Good luck!

Ben, trust this advice.  He knows what he is talking about.  He has given you everything you need to have a great chance.  Good luck and hope you have a story on Monday with pictures.

I use a Pfleuger President.  Smooth and does the job at a fairly low price.  No complaints with it.

Makes me want to bust out the scuba gear and go for a dive.

Safety First / Re: What is considered unsafe sea condition?

I would say look into taking a class and then you will be better prepared to answer that question based on your skill level and tolerance for the conditions.
