What do you fish for when crabbing and rockfish are not in season?

Or do you just go crabbing?

I’ve never crabbed before, or done it on my ‘yak, so I’m curious what others do. I could also see just crabbing my first time to keep it easy, but….. it also seems like there will be some down time and it’d be fun to catch fish too.

California halibut, but I rarely catch them.  Sometimes I sabiki for baitfish, thinking to use it as crab bait, live halibut bait, or to use later in the season as (dead) bait.

If I am working 4 hoops form my kayak, I find that I don't really have that much downtime.  But others soak them longer.  If you are lucky and get an early dungie limit, that is when the fishing gear really comes in handy.

I'm leaving my rod at home tomorrow, but that is mostly because I will fool around sailing the AI if I have extra time.

Crab is probably my favorite seafood. I usually bottom bounce a swimbait in hopes of a halibut while waiting for crab, but haven't connected yet. One day ...
