I would like to petition for a sea lion cull. But that’s probably not going to happen.

Instead, maybe college football fans could chant “F¥#% sea lions” during Saturday games. Baby steps.

They set up cameras to catch the person responsible, and it turned out to be Coyotes.

I think this a different situation, the coyote decapitation was of baby seals at Van Damme this decapitation was a sea lion at Doran.

I couldn't read the article so I just assumed it was the same reports from a few days ago. I did find an article and the Sea lion was dead already when the head was removed.

General Talk / Re: Techniques to landing a kayak in the surf.
« on: February 25, 2025, 06:06:48 AM »

Or do most people just get close enough to the shore where they can jump out and stand (like knee to waist high water), and then direct the boat in while standing? I'm wipeing out at the end where I could be standing, so that seems like an easy adjustment to make.

One thing to keep in mind is that some launch points drop off really fast. Fort Ross is one of them. I was coming back in to what I thought was waist deep water, and went in over my head. Needed to swim the rest of the way in.

I have been using CorrosionX on all of my electrical conections, and it has been working great. I reapply a couple times a year.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Salmon Season?

Members of Coastside requested a bubble fishery based on Coastside’s continuing efforts with the net pen project. The returns at the Mokelumne Hatchery has been phenomenal, but those returns are not counted when determining the salmon season. The salmon that are raised in the net pens at HMB are from the Mokelumne Hatchery.

So presumably the season would be limited in duration, and the fishable area would be around HMB. Whether you are for or against a salmon season the decision will be made in the next few months so speak up at the meetings.

As Paul mentioned a surf zone class is you best bet to learn the different techniques. I have taken 2 surf zone classes, and this is my report from about 5 years ago:

"On May 19, I participated in a Surf Zone Class with River and Ocean Paddle Sports. First off I can say that I have now turtled my Eddyline Caribbean 14' every conceivable way. In fact so many times that I stopped keeping track around 11am.

Anyone thinking of launching in the surf zone (surf above 1-2 feet) should not without some training and practice. The odds of success are low to nil.

This class is for students that have successfully passed sea kayaking 1 & 2 so we were expected to have the basics covered. We had four students in the class: a woman in her 30s, and two other guys in their mid 20s. The two guys were in excellent shape and one is an avid surfer. Two students had sit inside sea kayaks and two of us had sit on top style.

The class was held at Miramar Beach in Half Moon  Bay. The average surf was 2-3 feet with sets of 4-5 foot waves about every 10 minutes. The teacher started off the class explaining wave timing and then had us give it a try. One person asked about landing and the teacher said don't worry about that now we will cover that later. Just go out to the safe zone(beyond the breakers) and come back in anyway you want. Well, going out is fairly easy and all of us were able to on the first try. Coming back in is much more challenging---we all got dumped on the way in.

Throughout the day we were taught and shown how to deal with different conditions, and then we would practice. We practiced going out forwards and backwards, coming in forwards and backwards, fast reverse brace, side bracing, and paddling parallel right at the breaking waves. Each time we would dump the teacher would explain why and then send us out to try again. Everyone in the class got dumped over and over throughout the day, only the teacher made it to the end without getting dumped.

One of the most important things I learned is that you cannot surf long kayaks in front of the wave perpendicular, either you surf on top of the wave or you do a bracing side surf in front. Many times I would look back and see a wave beginning to break and I couldn't decide what to do. In a split second you need to make a decision and go for it---if you don't it's turtle time. Some of the choices are: fast reverse brace to punch through backwards, try to out run it, or a bracing side surf. Although I was starting to get the hang of most of the techniques it is not to the level where I would go out in the surf with my fishing gear. I will need to get a lot more practice, or i will just launch from protected areas.

The class was taught by Kelly Marie Henry and I can highly recommend her, she did a fantastic job.

My goal was to complete sea kayaking 1 & 2, and the surf zone class before fishing in the ocean(I did sneak out to TC on May 5) and now that those are completed and with trips out on the lakes and bay I feel quite confident about going out in the ocean (from protected launch sites)."

Since then I have been out in the ocean many times bet still prefer protected launches.

I wonder if my buddy will be out there visiting?

Loch Ness Monster?   :smt005

Get him in a lineup and see if Mark can ID him?

The one that flipped me was light colored, but don't think I could pick it out in a line up. But if Eric rounds up a bunch of them, and puts them in a line I'll give it a shot.

General Talk / Bay Tackle Owner Retiring
« on: February 14, 2025, 03:18:45 PM »
Bay Tackle has been my go to tackle shop for over 40 years, and the owner George let me know that he wants to retire in the next few months. He has been looking for a buyer for a while but so far nothing has panned out. Still tons of inventory including high end tuna reels, and rods. Everything in the store is 25% off. I picked up a couple of Calstar Grafighter rods.

General Talk / Re: Lake Pillsbury dam removal

Do you have a link to the story?

The story was in the Chronicle yesterday but it may not be viewable without a subscription, California Trout should have an update soon. The article stated that all stake holders were in agreement but figuring out how to continue diverting water into the Russian River needed to be figured out, and could be cost prohibitive.

Thank you. It's my frontrunner for a new boat.

Not sure I understand the "transducer glued inside" description. Doesn't it need to be in the water to work?

You can glue in downscan transducers but not side scan ones. I used Lexel, and you can use silicone as well. Just need to make sure there are no bubbles in the glue. I thought about a water bath but I fish the East Bay lakes, and you cannot have any water in the hull. It’s not very easy to remove the transducers when you glue them in. I removed the one in the picture, and then put it back later because the Hook2 is a quick setup for use in the lakes. In the ocean I use the Raymarine because it has relief shading.

Mark,

I've got my eye on a Caribbean 14 FS, mainly because of the weight. If you're willing to answer some questions:

How stable is the C14? I'm on a Hobie Compass now and it is really stable.  Compass is 34" wide IIRC. C14 is 29".

Does your C14 have a well for a transducer, or do you have to drop it over the side?

Could you mount a scotty flush mount on the gunwale for something like a mini downrigger? I'm not talking about a track mount, but actual drilling holes.

The Compass is possibly the lightest 12+ pedal kayak out there but I can tell I'm going to need something lighter in the coming years. And it looks like I will need to give up pedaling to do it.

I really do not have anything to compare the C14 to as far as stability but I haven't had any issues.

Mine does not have a transducer well so I have a Hook2 transducer glued inside, and a Raymarine that hangs off the side.

I use a downrigger mounted on the rail with a double attachment mount.

I think you will really like a C14. I still use mine for fresh water. Let me know if you would like pictures of any of the mounting. I have drilled around 60 holes for stuff above the water line for all of the stuff I have. If you mount something like a downrigger you will need a backing plate.

When I first joined I didn't have a kayak but was seriously considering getting one. Things changed fast when I won a Native Slayer peddle drive in a raffle here. It weighed over a 100 pounds without the drive unit, and getting off the car was the last time I handled it.  At that time I just couldn't see myself getting it on and off the car without help.

Decided to sell it and get something light. Ended up with the Eddyline Caribbean 14, and have been super happy with it over the last 6 years. Last year I was trying to decide between getting a Revo, or a Stealth Pro Fisha 475. I called Ruben to find out how long it would take to get one of the 475s, and he said about six months minimum, however he let me know that he was getting a shipment in a week, and would have every model available including a Carbon 475.

Ended up with the Elite 525 after reading some reviews, and because it is lighter than the 475 carbon. My Eddyline is probably up from 50lbs to 70lbs with all of the permanent add-ons. The Elite is 50lbs plus the transducer so it is easier to move around than the Eddyline.

So Lightweight is the way to go for me.

One of my work clients is a pretty well known paddling expert, and I was mumbling about learning to use my core instead of my arms. He says hey I have a kayak paddling machine, and I can give you a quick lesson. Anyway it was quite enlightening but after years of just using my arms it's hard to make the change.
