Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Top Loading Kayak on Car
« on: December 05, 2024, 12:19:40 PM »
I have Yakima round bars and installed the BoatLoader extensions. Works great when I load solo. YMMV

https://yakima.com/products/boatloader

I have one of these with the bars, and the Thule version with bars. Free to anyone who can use them. You would need to find the attachment clips for your vehicle. The Yakima clips I have are for a 2011 Leaf, and the Thule clips are for a Mitsubishi Outlander.

I'll take the Yakima stuff Mark, when I transport two kayaks I can not side load the way I normally do. The extensions look like they would help with this although I guess If there's two kayaks I probably have a buddy with me.....

Or your buddy could watch, and take it easy after a hard day of fishing. I will take a look in the basement, and hold them for you.

Right on, typically when I take my buddys fishing they end up with some kinda HUUUUGEEEST fish ever (and I just get normal sized fish) so the're kinda tuckered out.  😄

Here is where I first look for point specific information. If you look at tomorrow it will show really good conditions for HMB, the wind is still down and the swell is about half of what it was on Tuesday.

Good job Dan, I've turned back after going out the Jaws and wished I had tuned back sooner as well.

The forecast for Tuesday was showing for mixed swell from the the North West and the South West which combined can be hard to manage.

For example 2'@ 10 seconds from the south west + 4'@ 10 seconds from the north west can combine to be 6' @10 seconds.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: HMB 11/23

Gave it a look this morning -- went about a quarter of the way to the green can and turned back without dropping any gear. Winds were fine, but it was a very confused sea state with a decent sized roller every now and then.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks for the report Brad, looking at the forecast now the combinations of steep NW and SW swells must be mess.

Only spots I can see with protection today are the harbors, the Bay and Tomales.

Safety First / Re: Acceptable forecast for beginners

The direction of the swell can make a big difference, which varies from port to port.

going there to see how things look, always correlating that to the various forecasts you looked at, and dedicating yourself to learning

things can change quickly out there.

This is how you learn what is an acceptable forcast. Even if you don't go you can read the forecast and then compare to what the folks that went report and that is also helpful but not as direct a way to learn.

Thanks for the info! Stick bait, is that plugs and lures?

Plugs, lures or swim bait all work just use whatever you would use from shore. You want to fish the top or mid water so your retrieve speed will be different depending on which you choose. A lure like something from Lucky Craft would be where I would start.

Oh and congradulations you just exceeded 10 posts so you now have access to thousands of old "members only hookups and fishing reports".....dive in there's some great stories to be read and knowledge to be had!

Is it weird to wear a PFD with a marine radio clipped to it on a boat? I don't think I've ever seen it but I'm thinking of doing it next time I find myself on a fishing boat. I don't find it uncomfortable, and it could save a life or five.

I do this, nobody has said anything about it to me, been on several different boats.
I also have mine on a boat, kayak, surf fishing etc... just another part of my PFD.

Me too, and if it's a smaller boat or conditions are rough I'll even wear my wetsuit. I don't feel much safer on a boat and since I'm typically not the captain I feel less in control of what may happen than I do on my kayak.

Do a search, there's some great old OG reports from Linda Mar, typically back casting stick baits and such into the surf from beyond the break produced some huge stripers.

I've only caught them trolling but if I was targeting them I'd cast into tidal rips around jetty's and other structure.

Right on Dan, nice Grassy those are my favorite local species to target from shore.

Keep posting and watching for a hookup, see you on the water!

Super cool!

Interesting coincidence, been watching some documentaries and other videos of the hand made dories that launch and land on the beach in Pacific City. Those are simple, small, light, flat bottom boats. Made a quarter scale rowing dory as a kid with my stepdad and I could see taking on a motorized version in the garage at some point once my current projects are completed.

Congratulations on getting it done and ready to take out and enjoy!

General Talk / Re: Hoops it is...
« on: October 27, 2024, 01:05:50 PM »
If they allowed traps from the beginning of the season, that would mean the commercial would be open at the same time as recreational. That would make a bigger difference than hoops vs traps - once commercial is open - regardless of what you use (hoops or traps), it’s much harder to catch any crabs (at least based on my limited experience) as commercial boats scoop them up from the deeper waters, so most crabs don’t even make it anymore in the kayak range.

No and yes.

Commercial over the last ten years or so at least has typically been opened a couple weeks to a month after recreational even during the years when pots were allowed so no the commercial would not start at the same time as recreational. However if the restriction on pots continues throughout the crab season the recreational take is/would be much larger.

And yes once commercial opens the crabbing becomes much more challenging.
