General Fishing Tips / Re: How to fish for striped bass in the ocean?« on: November 05, 2024, 02:48:01 PM »Thanks for the info! Stick bait, is that plugs and lures? Plugs, lures or swim bait all work just use whatever you would use from shore. You want to fish the top or mid water so your retrieve speed will be different depending on which you choose. A lure like something from Lucky Craft would be where I would start. Oh and congradulations you just exceeded 10 posts so you now have access to thousands of old "members only hookups and fishing reports".....dive in there's some great stories to be read and knowledge to be had! 3
General Talk / Re: Sad« on: November 05, 2024, 12:21:54 PM »I also have mine on a boat, kayak, surf fishing etc... just another part of my PFD.Is it weird to wear a PFD with a marine radio clipped to it on a boat? I don't think I've ever seen it but I'm thinking of doing it next time I find myself on a fishing boat. I don't find it uncomfortable, and it could save a life or five. Me too, and if it's a smaller boat or conditions are rough I'll even wear my wetsuit. I don't feel much safer on a boat and since I'm typically not the captain I feel less in control of what may happen than I do on my kayak. 4

Do a search, there's some great old OG reports from Linda Mar, typically back casting stick baits and such into the surf from beyond the break produced some huge stripers.
I've only caught them trolling but if I was targeting them I'd cast into tidal rips around jetty's and other structure. 5

Love the story and pictures. We get so few dive reports but the quality of your reports makes up for it!

Right on Dan, nice Grassy those are my favorite local species to target from shore.
Keep posting and watching for a hookup, see you on the water! 7

Super cool!
Interesting coincidence, been watching some documentaries and other videos of the hand made dories that launch and land on the beach in Pacific City. Those are simple, small, light, flat bottom boats. Made a quarter scale rowing dory as a kid with my stepdad and I could see taking on a motorized version in the garage at some point once my current projects are completed. Congratulations on getting it done and ready to take out and enjoy! 8
General Talk / Re: Hoops it is...« on: October 27, 2024, 01:05:50 PM »If they allowed traps from the beginning of the season, that would mean the commercial would be open at the same time as recreational. That would make a bigger difference than hoops vs traps - once commercial is open - regardless of what you use (hoops or traps), it’s much harder to catch any crabs (at least based on my limited experience) as commercial boats scoop them up from the deeper waters, so most crabs don’t even make it anymore in the kayak range. No and yes. Commercial over the last ten years or so at least has typically been opened a couple weeks to a month after recreational even during the years when pots were allowed so no the commercial would not start at the same time as recreational. However if the restriction on pots continues throughout the crab season the recreational take is/would be much larger. And yes once commercial opens the crabbing becomes much more challenging. 9
Stealth / Re: Made the Leap to Stealth« on: October 09, 2024, 02:43:05 PM »
Did you get a seat or a backrest?
Sitting in the Stealth without one of these my back was unsupported and it soon became uncomfortable. Despite some running with no backrest I found I needed additional support. 10

Sick Stealth!
Fish finder install looks really nice and clean and I'm loving the black and white theme Mark. 11
Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Lake Alpine - 9/28« on: September 24, 2024, 05:46:07 PM »
Hey Glen!
I've only shore fished Alpine a few times but had decent luck near the dam. I spend more time down lower on Spicer or Union typically trolling a lure or power bait behind a flasher, it's a dawn or dusk only bite so don't waste time fishing once it's sunny. There's was a really good kinda recent NCKA report from Spicer called "Granite hugger" I think but can't find it now. The bite was at the dam as well. Looking forward to the report! 12
Stealth / Re: Stealth transport« on: September 11, 2024, 06:00:21 PM »I'll second a recommendation for the lockracks -- I get almost zero movement on the kayak. I mounted them on the t-track on my hullavators and it is rock solid. For my 2022 outback it has to ride bottom up to fit, but I prefer that anyway. I'll leave it to Moo and Eddie on how they fit the narrower Stealths but I've been super happy with them. You have two options for mounting when you buy the Lock Rack either bolt it directly to a track bar like you have Mark or buy the adaptor that can clamp to round square or aero bars. Might be a little too complicated but you could try with my set to see if it works. I really like how simple, secure and light they are. 13
Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Cheap portable aerator 12v conversion« on: September 11, 2024, 05:06:22 PM »I use a dogfood container and quart container to scoop freshwater to keep the bait alive. Unless you have lots of baits, it’s easy to just scoop water into the container and no need for an aerator I do this as well, simple and less gear is always best IMO. Unfortunately this doesn't work if catching bait the day before. 14
Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Cheap portable aerator 12v conversion« on: September 11, 2024, 12:22:19 PM »
Nice work!
I bought this one it came with all that stuff, it's lasted over five years and at least 10 trips and I'm still on the first set of batteries because I run it off an outlet at home and the 12v when I'm driving. Costs ten times as much but you don't need to buy or fab anything else. Full disclosure the cigarette charging adapter eventually broke but my car came with a 12v to 120v converter option.....so I'm still good. 15
Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: Open invite - Sly Creek - Saturday 8/31« on: September 06, 2024, 01:33:39 PM »
Whoo hoo double limits!
Not a lot of freshwater experience so I had to look it up, nice to see the possession limit is twice the daily bag limit. Makes me want to go camping! Shoot I thought we had driven a long way....Pismo to Sly Creek the next day...dang. Did the bite slow down once the jet skis and boats started buzzing around? Sometimes you get the good fate. Thanks for the report Kyle I learned some stuff. -Michael |
