very nice John!

I've been thinking about something similar for ours, though needs to be easy in/out as we sometimes need our back seat for people.

Thanks,
Brian.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Kayak roof basket

very cool, that's how I load my yaks, though I first need to bungie a chonk of 2" schedule 40 PVC between the front and rear rack.  I've been noodling on a design from wood that would accomplish the same, but keep the load on the racks and not on the wood.

very sorry to hear this Al, I hope they return the goods - seems a strange bunch of stuff to steal - wishing you better luck,
Brian.

they should address the bigger problems impacting salmon numbers, water, non native fish, etc.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Lifetime Fishing License at age 62?
« on: February 22, 2025, 06:25:05 AM »
my wife bought me the lifetime hunting/fishing license years ago (30ish?), I've wandered back and forth from the sports, but feel it has probably paid for itself.  I do add on the second rod, and a few others some years

enjoy it.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Fish Cleaning Table

wow, looks nice!

Galvanized and Stainless steel can cause corrosion at the interface - so you might look for a way to keep them isolated somehow, possibly a plastic or wood piece between them, or plumbers tape if the legs are threaded in.

otherwise, just make sure you get all the saltwater cleaned off after use - and keep the table clean and dry between uses.

see ya,
Brian.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Camping near San Diego?
« on: February 11, 2025, 06:29:10 AM »
Rancho Cuayamaca is a great campground esp for tent camping (assuming you are tent camping?)

all of the county parks are also very nice
Dos Picos in Ramona
Guajome in Oceanside (really Vista imo)
here is a link to them all, imo they are better maintained than the state parks
https://www.sdparks.org/content/sdparks/en/buttons/CampingButton.html

There are also a couple campgrounds right on the coast. South Carlsbad and San Elijo St. Beach.  The campgrounds and facilities are not as nice...but you are literally on the coast.

I believe the Campland on Mission Bay also offers tent camping, it would be a little more $$$, but you're on the bay and the facilities are nice and clean - I've launched my kayak there a number of times.

I hope that helps,
Brian.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Re: Doran beach crab and chill 2025
« on: January 28, 2025, 09:28:23 AM »
Had a fun time out at the Crab and Chill this year.  Met my neighbor Josh who was camping and crabbing with his family.

Friday I did not make it out on the water - the 'crud' I've been fighting had too strong a grip on me.  Saturday I heard from Scotty after he launched, so I launched and met him on the water.  Scotty had one keeper rock crab with some nice mitts - I completely skunked - I caught one tiny crab (~1"), some snails, and a Starry Flounder in my net - they all went back to the brine undisturbed.

I headed out again Sunday morning before the games started, set my nets twice caught one keeper, and we enjoyed that while watching the KC/Buffalo game - the crab and game we great.

Crazy to see what would happen if I died and sank to the bottom of Monterey Bay.  :smt044

I think that would be a great way to go

nice, looks like a productive day.  I've always thrown them back as I'm not sure how to  clean them, If I fillet them, doesn't seem like I would get any meat?  how do you prepare them?

Thanks,
Brian.

Good luck, but you seem to make your own luck!
I'll be crabbing down at Bodega this weekend, maybe try for some perches and halibut as well

I LOVE the confidence!  this will be my first time out this season, I've been hearing mainly negative feedback from crabbers this year - hoping for good luck on Friday.

Welcome! enjoy the fishing whether from shore or Kayak.  When you head out in the kayak, make sure you have all the safety gear and a buddy.
