General Talk / Re: Lowrance eagle 9 live problem
« on: April 16, 2025, 02:04:48 PM »
I have no experience with any newer model lowrance units, and my old ones worked well.

I have seen electrical issues manifest themselves as a malfunctioning fishfinder. I recently discovered that my nocqua battery had gone bad when my FF stopped reading bottom or kept giving my bad readings. I would start by trying a different electrical source if you haven’t already, just to rule that out first.

Ill get my registration in soon. Can't wait for some Shelter! I got site 80 again this year. I'm arriving Wednesday afternoon if anyone is pre fishing Thursday/Friday.

I’ll be there Thursday for some Friday pre fishing.

This one is going to be a fun one again.

If anyone has never fished for Kokanee before this would be a great chance to learn a few different techniques from a few different people. I’ll try to bring some extra gear to loan out just in case.

For the potluck Sam and I will probably do pulled pork sliders again.

I’ll probably throw some lures etc in for some sort of prize as well.

Used for a few seasons transporting the old stealth which I sold.

Pickup in Windsor or NCKA express to wherever. Or meet up at a fishing spot is an option too.

All this Florida talk makes me want to go again! I’ve only been once to Miami and didn’t get to fish nearly as much as I wanted.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Rear seat storage
« on: March 17, 2025, 09:10:33 AM »
I realize that looking at the pictures it doesn’t look like much, but I gained about 5 cubic feet of extra room, and the room is totally flat which makes stacking storage containers much easier. Side note I can throw a sleeping pad down and use it for a small sleeping area for myself. Or put the dogs beds back there so they have a nicer travel area than the bed of my truck.

Brian on my truck I could have left the seatbelts in place (I actually might put them back in) and had the whole install/uninstall down to 4 bolts and 3 screws. Maybe an hour worth of work if I was to put the seat back in. As it sits now I can still have people sit back there and the shoulder belts are still in place, but not the attachment point where they click in. So in an emergency there is still some sort of back seat seating.

Really I always pack too much crap when fishing and this is just an excuse to bring even more!

Craftsmen's Corner / Rear seat storage
« on: March 16, 2025, 07:52:47 PM »
My truck has a little baby back seat. It is a 4 door full sized truck, but it has the small (quad cab) rear seat instead of the large (crew cab) rear seat. I never have people sit back there. In the 13 years I’ve owned the truck I can probably count on 1 hand how many times I’ve had humans in the back of my truck.

I decided that I wanted to make some changes to the rear seat area so that I would have a nice flat area to store fishing and camping gear. I came up with a plan to take out the rear seat and basically replace it with  plywood covered in carpet that hinges at the bottom to allow access to the storage area under where the seat used to be.

The rear seat came out with 4 bolts. 3 more for the seatbelts. Finally 3 more for the anchors for the car seats.

Once everything was out I used a sheet of 3/4 plywood and some outdoor carpet. I cut it to fit, using the old mounting holes to mount the plywood. Then fitted some hinges and boom, flat storage area done!

General Talk / Re: Any fad diets for Hobies? Asking for a friend.

I watch Kayak Dan from Headwaters and he was paddling a 14 foot Stellar Sit in, and I follow a couple of guys up here who fish big blue from sit insides.  At 37 lbs that stellar has a nice read deck for a track system for rods and tackle.  Trying to troll from forward of your seating position on the 555 doesn't work for me, and I have kind of given up on trying.  This year I think it is going to be a clip on bell on the rod to let me know when I have a strike if I am trolling.

Side note, glad this keeping some of you entertained!

Instead of a bell maybe drag clicker set sort of loose?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Help w a kayak fishing rod / reel?
« on: February 20, 2025, 02:37:23 PM »
I’m gonna venture into the ocean soon.  My first quarry will be a halibut.

I have bass fishing rods.  I want an ocean dedicated fishing combo.  One multi-tasking setup.  I’m hoping a rockfish rod and Hali rod can do double duty.

I’m comfortable w a 7-footer.

Shop suggest a Daiwa VIP 870(?). But they didn’t have one.  Reel?   Tranx 200?  300?

Line is what?  50lb braid?

I am not familiar with the Diawa VIP 870. It’s a 7 foot 15-40 glass rod MSRP $120

I do own and use for both halibut and RF a Diawa Harrier X in 7 foot medium. MSRP is $130 It has served me very well and I highly recommend it if you are looking in that price range.

For the reel if you are looking at a tranx I would go 300 instead of 200. The internals of the 300 are larger and will handle heavy weights and big fish better than the 200. I do not own any tranx reels myself. I do own multiple okuma Komodo 300 reels. Similar to the tranx but with a clicker and stainless internal gearing.
If you want low profile and are on a budget both kastking and piscifun offer 300 sized baitcasters at an entry level price.

If you aren’t tied to a low profile reel or a star drag an avet sxj is a great choice for a smaller lever drag conventional. The J is for jigging meaning it has a narrow spool so line is easier to lay. You don’t need a ton of line capacity in NorCal unless you are doing deep water RF out of a boat and are way offshore. The sxj is on my harrier rod.

Line wise I’ve settled onto 30lb braid. Berkely x9 in green. I feel like it cuts through the water well so I don’t get too much angle when fishing deep and it’s plenty strong for kayak fishing. I’ll usually put some sort of top shot on it. 20 or something feet of mono/flouro.

I started out with an ugly stick and a penn. Great stuff and indestructible. Nowadays the harrier/avet combo, a trevala s (now px series)/accurate tern combo and or a light spinner combo come with me for rockfish/halibut. The harrier/avet is the most versatile.

All that being said if you look around at used there are some good deals out there sometimes. Also lots of crappy deals.

If you are ever around Windsor and want to check out the combos just let me know. Also if you are a left handed reeler I have a couple of 300 sized baitcasters that I’ll part with for cheap.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Lifetime Fishing License at age 62?
« on: February 18, 2025, 05:15:42 PM »
I bought a lifetime when I turned 40. I factored in that I would be in CA until at least 50. So 10 years of buying an annual at the price at the time was more than an annual. Factor in price increases on the annual and it will probably pay for itself in 10 ish years. You seem pretty darn healthy for your age so I don’t see any reason you wouldn’t be fishing way past the next 10 years.

I’d like to hear your experience. My biggest cart complaint is storage after launch. That one looks like it breaks down pretty well for storage.
