Who knew pacific tako

This is a octopus we caught in a crab cage. He opened the 2 bait cans of chicken and fish. He also ate the whole mackerel that was hanging from the zip tie. To bad we couldn't keep it.

Ha! Opened the bait cans.

That octopus had a nice dinner.  In other countries, they use traps to catch octopuses.
We can only use hooks, lines, or hands to catch an octopus in California.
I got lucky once and caught a nice one with my swimbait.

Caught a 10+ lb one jigging on a rock cod charter 200+ft many many years ago…
Deckhand didn’t even hesitate to consult me and started divvying up the tentacles for lingcod bait. Had to stop him to request to keep my share of a pair of tentacles to keep for dinner. As bait they slayed, though. Can’t say I blame him. They killed the lings.

It looks like a fork and plastic bag is all that's needed to catch an octopus...

Cool. That's a big one! I've only found some small ones along the jetty and tide pools on the sonoma coast.

That's a big one. Wish we could dive for them in shallow water like in Hawai'i.

I know, I still have not caught a 10 lber. Biggest was 5lbs on Maui.

I've seen a couple that size pulled up on a party boat near the Farallon Islands. Deckhand stuck it into one of the igloo coolers. Poor thing kept trying to get out.
