Change of plans - my window shortened dramatically. So, maybe a couple hours at Contra Loma tomorrow. Will report back results.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: HMB Opening Day Limit« on: November 06, 2024, 08:51:19 PM »My understanding is that the time limit is what allows them to keep hoop net season open while there are whales in the area -- the idea being that you are close enough to see whales in the area and mitigate risk or immediately report an entanglement. Why 2 hours? I imagine that's arbitrary. I don't know for sure, though.Maximum time between checks is 2 hours. Does anybody know why they care how long a hoop net sits on the bottom?I’m planning on using hoop nets, Promar Ambush (5lbs), so check at most every 2h and buoy with my GO ID on it. I hope I’m not forgetting something important 😅Nice limit! Thanks for sharing. So do you know what the regulations are for crabbing? The wording of your question has me wondering if you know what the gear restrictions are? I think two hours is probably to give you just enough time to drop hoops, then zip over to a reef, catch a ling cod or couple rockfish, then go check hoops.... I mean, that's my strategy anyway, haha. 4

And freshwater! Trout, Kokanee, bass, etc. Stripers can be found all over the delta too.

General Talk / Re: Cookin with Crab!« on: November 05, 2024, 02:12:08 PM »
Oh man, I really need to go get some crab now...
My mom used to make crab sandwiches when I was a kid, and we make these maybe once or twice a year now. Sautee some finely chopped onion and celery in generous amount of butter for a few minutes. Add generous amount of cooked and shelled crab, salt and pepper to taste, and cook for another few minutes. Remove from heat, and add mixture to mixing bowl. Mix in mayo and a little cream cheese. Back in your still warm pan, add more butter and melt over medium. Spoon your crab mixture onto sliced bread (I like sourdough or sausage rolls), add to hot butter, and toast for a minute or two on each side, 'til golden brown. Over the years we've made this with a number of different stuff mixed in - bacon, fresh herbs, mushrooms - there is no wrong answer here. Also works well with most other seafood. 7
Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: HMB Opening Day Limit« on: November 05, 2024, 01:58:15 PM »Nice limit! Thanks for sharing. No I don’t fish while crabbing. Mostly because it’s more gear than is reasonable for my kayak. Also I believe crabs like sand and rockfish prefer rocks. Since I use hoop nets I can’t leave them soaking for the day while I go fishing. The main limit to the number of pots is stacking and transporting them safely especially when doing surf launch and landings. When I was new I spent quite a while in fresh water getting comfortable on my kayak which made me better at handling the swells on the ocean. If you’re comfortable in rough conditions you should be ok crabbing. If you are still getting used to kayaking, probably a good idea to stick to one activity at a time. Santa Cruz, Capitola, or Monterey would all be good choices also - easy launches and more protected waters. Not the best locations for crabbing, but good for getting familiar with kayaking in the salt water. Decent fishing within reasonable distance to the launch also. 8

Nice work!
Nice limit! Thanks for sharing. I started with 2, caught plenty of limits with 2. Just takes a little longer sometimes. I do fish in between soaks, especially if rockfish is still open. Tough to beat crab and lingcod combo! 9

Below is where i sink my net, its wrong spot? What app is that with the beautiful bottom map? That is Navionics, the Garmin map app. They have some free features, but to get that level of detail requires the subscription. I paid for it when it was $25/year, but it's like $60 now... 10

Safety First / Re: New Ocean Fishing Buddy Checklist« on: November 04, 2024, 04:07:54 PM »I've felt the same way, i've had my board slip and be hard to manage with a fish sometimes out in the swell. Your question sparked an idea that think I'll try out! I have some flat magnets I can add to the board and the topside of my kayak so i will stay in place when I pull it out.I would add a measuring device Ooo, magnets are a good idea... Gonna have to do some measuring and figuring now... 12

Safety First / Re: New Ocean Fishing Buddy Checklist« on: November 04, 2024, 07:10:20 AM »I would add a measuring device I've been trying to think of a way to mount a measuring board somehow in my kayak. I hate having to pull the board out and do the three arm shuffle trying to hold the fish, hold the board, take a picture, and hoping the whole time that the fish cooperates and doesn't jump out of my lap and back in the water. Go go gadget bump board? I lost a mediumish ling a while back because as I was trying to measure it, the fish decided it had better plans and flopped off the board and right back into the water. The whole thing would be easier if the board just lived on a flat surface somewhere on the deck of my kayak. Trouble is, all the deck space is accounted for ... Still pondering it... 14

Sweet trailer setup!
Just a thought - could you put a 2x4 under the PVC to stiffen it from the bottom? Would still get the compliant part of the PVC, but supported in a way that it won't break. Also, love that your trailer has Unistrut. Such an under-rated project material! |
