I like them fried whole (heads and guts and all) as what we call "fries with eyes."  I like them even more as boquerones and I will do some fish sauce with some next year.

Thanks to tedski the nuts are off and I can re-assemble my rudder system again with all new parts.  Thanks Ted!  :smt006. Impact drill with the Irwin bolt extractors made quick work of that problem.

Impact and Kroil are a good combo for sure!

I’m curious if he had consent to film and display the other fisherman publicly.

Does he need consent?  It's in public.

He sure doesn't.

What's the odd to catch a Great White from shore?

When you target them?  Pretty good, I'd imagine.  Especially if you're dropping your bait from a drone where you can basically sight-fish them.

Yeah it was bycatch…..I always bring a 30 wide to the beach and lock it up in a stand up harness and fighting belt to catch perch.

and the steel leader... you know how those striper teeth can be.  And you know how it goes... big bait big fish... that's why I always rig up an 8/0 hook for surfperch to weed out the little guys.

+1 on penetrating oil a few times a day for a week or so (I use Kroil, but you'll find no shortage of opinions on which penetrating lube to use).  I also tap with a hammer a bunch of times each time I add penetrating lube to help crack the bonds and let the lube get farther in.  For those nuts, I'd use a nut extractor on an impact once you're ready.  Bring a cutoff wheel, too, because it's likely you'll just need to shave them off in the end.

I can loan ya the nut extractors and some Kroil if you don't feel like purchasing.

Nicely done!  Where'd you find left handed bits locally?

Another +1 for Crocs.  I wore boots (actual work boots) over my drysuit socks when I got paid to wear a drysuit... now I focus on comfort with Crocs.  Make sure to throw them in 4wd so they don't float off when you dangle a foot in the water.

I prefer left hand bits over an EZ-Out, personally.  EZ Outs are good, but I use other extractors first.  If you don't want to buy anything, you're more than welcome to bring it here and we can get it out in a jiffy.

I was out there Friday as well.  Launched at 6:30 from A dock and got on anchovies immediately outside the harbor entrance.  A friend of mine had requested some anchovies for the table, so I started to load up.  The schools were smaller and harder to chase, so we moved on hoping there would be easier schools to stay with.  I was also hoping for a repeat of the previous week with a large Pac mack or three for the grill -- no such luck.  Trolled my way out to Lighthouse Point where bigger schools of 'chovy were being pushed up against the kelp beds in hopes for another repeat -- much luck on that hope.

I, too, released a few browns before I got to the yellow buoy... but no verm for me.  I heard Al talk about the verm on the radio and I was envious.  Once over at the reef off Lighthouse, the anchovies were once again thick and nearly at the surface.  I sat on top of those stocking up on anchovies for my friend and jacksmelt for this season's crab bait.  I picked up a few Jack mackerel, but no other luck on the mack front.  Then I caught a pretty big brown at 16" and couldn't fight the taco thoughts, so it went in the box and 4 of the sabiki hooks were sacrificed.

We trolled around the edges of the reef a bit and my buddy caught a legal ling but lost it at the side of the boat.  We started to troll back in and other than a few acrobatic sea lions, it was dead quiet.  I picked up a few small croaker as we approached the harbor, so I packed it up.  Right at the mouth of the harbor, we hit another massive school of anchovy with a few commies sitting on top of them.  I decided to top up the anchovy pile one last time and spent nearly an hour catching 1 or 2 at a time on my sad, but legal sabiki.

All in all, 1 big brown, 5 lbs of crab bait, and 3 lbs of anchovies wound up coming home with me.

Cafe Beaujolais was as good as advertised, and a really pleasant surprise of a high end meal.  I was not expecting summer corn soup, sauteed black cod, and homemade carrot cake ice cream to blow me away, but wow, color me satisfied.

This is really good to hear.  They were our favorite restaurant in the area, hands down until they changed chefs a few years back.  The new chef was trying, and not succeeding, at a bit of an asian/new-american fusion menu.  I still hit up their pizza and burger spot out back, but stopped eating at the restaurant for dinner after giving them 3 or 4 tries with disappointing results.  It sounds like they maybe have another new chef... we'll get it back on our list.

I thought CHP issued the VIN plates.  I've had a few friends build custom motorcycles or sidecars and that's where they got their VIN plate to rivet on.

For Sale / Re: FS - Hobie Adventure $1k

Nice looking Adventure.

So tempting…

I'll take it!

Hilarious progression -- and can't blame ya, I wonder if I'da been able to hold out for as long as you did. I already have two adventure hulls.... but that's only enough for myself and one friend!

Hilarious indeed.
I know a guy who had three motorcycles parked in his garage. His wife said, Why do you need three? You only have one ass! I think he sold one and still has two...

This is why I reference my current motorcycle count as "only three for now."  It immediately makes it clear that I'm low on motorcycles and foresee more in the future.

CA Regulations / Re: Fishing on a SUP question
« on: July 12, 2024, 09:10:15 AM »
I don't think I would have ever thought "does this thing need to be reg'd" if I had somehow come into contact with a motorized SUP.  I can't imagine any of my former colleagues would have either.  I certainly wouldn't be registering it, either.
