Other Kayaks / Re: Lightning Kayaks 25%Off Sale

+1 for Lightning, as I also had the opportunity to ride one at the PanAms.  In fact, I'm thinking of getting one myself.  Solid kayak at a solid price.

August 9th

2nd World Championship Tuscany Italy September 20-25

Is it a strict top 10, or do they roll down to like 15, anticipating that some invites will decline/drop out?

This is really really cool

Good question.  It will probably go down the list.  But really, where does one stop before it feels less legit?

Here’s another West Coast qualifier for the USA Saltwater Nationals in Pompano Beach, FL on August 9th.  Top 10 will get an invite.  Do you think you have what it takes to become part of Team USA?

Same campground as the old days? I think it was Chinook Bend?

That's the plan.  Working on finalizing.

Went from 30" Duelers to 32" Toyo OC3s and mpg dropped from 22 to 19.5 lol

I also have Toyo OC3's, in the stock size for my truck, and my gas mileage probably dropped 2 mpg.  But they sure do handle the snow and ice better.

The revival of ORC is in the works.  The date is July 19.  Depoe Bay, OR.

And this year, it will be a qualifier event for the USA National Championship for Saltwater Kayak Fishing.  Do you think you have what it takes to represent Team USA on the international level?  Here's your chance!

Stay tuned for more details.

I was told that aerodynamic drag is exponential. So even a slight increase in speed has a big effect on things when they are not aerodynamic (roof rack with kayak).
I have noticed that with my electric car, that even putting the light weight Hobie Lynx on top really cuts down range dramatically at freeway speeds, but not so much at speeds under 50-60mph. So I now try to stay under 70mph. I'll get there when I get there.

So if you are not liking your gas mileage, drop your speed just 5 or 10 mph down to 60 - 70 or so and see what it does.

Drop it down even more to 55 and see where you are at.  I mean, the speed limit was 55 for a long time because of better gas mileage.

The other thing that really affects gas mileage in trucks is your choice of tires.  Put on those aggressive all terrains (which also weigh more) and watch your gas mileage drop.

Also, I swear my gas mileage drops every time there is a ECU software upgrade.

2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.  I get about 21-22 mpg in mixed driving.  I've had it up to 28 when running 55 mph down to San Diego, but that was early in life, and I can't seem to hit even 24 mpg anymore.

What an epic adventure…..Report of the Year Al!!!!!  That river exploration woulda made the trip for me. What a life it must be to have that backdrop as your daily playground.

I get torn between living in the moment and capturing the details, most of the time I opt not to take pics and regret it later.  Thanks for taking the time……especially the food porn  :smt001

But you usually tell a great tale.  I feel like we're due to for another.

General Talk / Re: The perfect kayak fishing rod?
« on: December 17, 2024, 05:02:50 PM »
So a few years back I went on my first 8-day long range.  I brought a spinning rod to throw wahoo bombs.  The old timers laughed at me and my coffee grinder.  Until I caught 14 wahoo on that thing.  The next year, more than half the boat was tossing spinning rods.  Choose the right rod for the job.

One thing I've really come to appreciate this past year fishing with Team USA is that we sort of live in a bubble here in CA in terms of what is considered suitable fishing rods.  We tend to use shorter, heavier and faster action rods.  And we use conventionals, when the rest of the world is using spinning. So my advice is that you need to come up with a lineup of rods.

And the rest of you need to size down, go longer, slow your action, and flip your rod over.  Don't judge, just try it.

Speaking of homemade did CDM use a old freezer or fridge, I think I recall him doing Linguica with great success

Sure miss that guy on site ..fond memories of Tequila shots at Albion

Marv too

It was his father-in-law that had the smoke room.  I was always begging Antonio to get me the recipe.  Apparently he was sworn to secrecy.

General Talk / Re: California lemon law changes January 1
« on: December 13, 2024, 12:28:05 PM »
Yikes, was def thinking of this as # of lemon law cases per xx number of units sold....

I actually kinda have to question those numbers though... Ford supplies an immense number of fleet and commercial vehicles.  Which, apparently:

"If a business owns or leases no more than five vehicles, including trucks and vans, the California Lemon Law may apply to those vehicles."
https://www.thelemonfirm.com/2024/03/20/commercial-vehicles/#:~:text=However%2C%20the%20law%20also%20extends,may%20apply%20to%20those%20vehicles.

So ... That isn't the whole set of numbers ...

It's still an average across a large set of numbers. I wouldn't expect the results to change materially if the sample size got larger.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Freediving for Dungies near the Bay Area?

This video warms my heart.  I used to night dive for dungees at that spot back in the early 90's.
