General Talk / Ideas for kayak lock/alarm?
« on: September 22, 2017, 12:18:06 PM »
What's up, guys?

I have the great privilege of living in a neighborhood where anything valuable that isn't securely bolted down will "walk away" in the middle of the night. (It's also happens to be a neighborhood with skyrocketing home prices. Ours went up in value by at least $250k in the 2 years since we bought it.)

I'm trying to come up with a way to (VERY) securely lock my kayak on the roof of my car, so that I can load it up the night before.

I've considered a seriously thick security chain motorcycle lock, but I understand that just about any metal security feature can be beat by a cheap handheld angle grinder from Harbor Freight...

I've also thought about rigging up an alarm of some sort, possibly using some of those little window/door screamer alarms.

Anyone gone through this thought process and come up with a solution?

Suggestions welcome. (Aside from the obvious suggestion of moving to a different neighborhood).

Cheers,

~Alex

Recipes / When life gives you peppers...

...make hickory-smoked pepper hot sauce, pickled jalapeños/Fresno's, and blistered Padrons.

Mmm...

I didn't really follow any "recipes", but I'd be glad to share some tips if anyone is interested.

This hot sauce is unreal... So good...

General Talk / Cherry Lake intel?
« on: June 21, 2017, 07:41:21 AM »
Hey guys,

Me and some friends are heading to Cherry Lake for some boat in camping over July 4th weekend. I'll have my 12 foot Gregor aluminum and a couple kayaks. I've never been there, but I understand you can camp just about anywhere around the lake as long as you're at least 100 feet from the high water mark. (Of course the goal is to find an existing camp spot rather than create a new one.)

Anyone have any tips on good camp spots? Or fishing techniques for summertime at Cherry Lake?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Alex

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Yeti Rambler - Quick Review...
« on: May 23, 2017, 07:59:49 AM »
My trusty old travel mug crapped out, so I bought a 20-oz Yeti Rambler.

The insulation is really f*cking good. Maybe too good. I poured my coffee over an hour and a half ago and it's still almost to hot to sip.

So... If that's what you're going for...

Wanted To Buy / Wanted - Lowrance HDI Skimmer (83/200/455/800)
« on: February 09, 2017, 07:48:52 AM »
What's up NCKA?

Anyone out there happen to have an extra Lowrance HDI Skimmer transducer or a spare power cord that'll fit my Hook 5 head unit?

I'm in the process of rigging up my little 12' Gregor skiff. Motor (8-HP Tohatsu) is on the way. Trailer will probably be bought this weekend. Now I just need to get my electronics in order.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,

Alex

General Talk / Sunglasses - Costa vs. Maui Jim vs. ???
« on: January 23, 2017, 11:30:05 AM »
What's up, guys?

I'm in the market for a new pair of fishing shades. Any opinions on Costa Del Mar versus Maui Jim?

I've always liked Costa, but a lot of recent Costa reviews are saying the customer service has gone to sh*t and the grippy rubber nose and temple pads peel off or melt if you get sunscreen on them. That got me thinking about trying Maui Jim...

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts before I drop  $200+ on a new pair of shades.

I'm also open to other brands, but I definitely prefer glass lenses over poly (less prone to scratching).

Cheers,

~Alex

General Fishing Tips / Sac guys - Best launch near Isleton?
« on: October 28, 2016, 02:54:36 PM »
Hey guys,

Can anyone recommend a good launch spot near Isleton? Ideally it'd be free and have a restroom, but I'm flexible.

I'm not too worried about paying to launch, but I'd rather avoid the hassle of filling out paperwork, etc, if possible...

Thanks!

Alex

For Sale / FYI - Shimano Symetre on sale at Cabelas
« on: October 26, 2016, 09:33:43 AM »
The Shimano Symetre is a great little spinning reel, and right now they're on sale for ~$70 at Cabelas (down from ~$100).

If I weren't pinching pennies for my upcoming Thailand/India trip, I'd pick up a second 2500... I've had my other Symetre 2500 for about 14 years now without any issues whatsoever (including lots of use in salty/sandy conditions).

General Fishing Tips / VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!
« on: September 29, 2016, 12:32:26 PM »
Hey everyone,

I posted this in my Bolinas/HMB chrome hookup thread, but I feel it deserves repeating here for anyone who might not see it in that thread. I thought about posting it in the "safety first" section, but I think it might have a better chance of being seen here.

So here it is...

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!

There's an active discussion on Coastside Fishing Club right now, and us kayak anglers are the topic. Several power boaters have expressed serious concern about how we aren't especially visible in low light and high swell conditions. They have requested that we be extra diligent with hi-vis flags and lights, especially in low low visibility conditions.

Of course we are all allowed to make our own safety choices, but it's in everyone's best interest to avoid accidents at ALL costs. From now on, my kayak will be sporting a hi-vis flag clipped to my spare rod, and early mornings I plan to wear TWO headlamps; one facing forward, one facing backward.

Some PB's have a bit of a "salty" attitude about kayakers in "their" ocean, but the vast majority are friendly guys who are just as stoked as we are.

I just ask that we all do our part.

Let's keep the lines of communication between kayakers and PBs open. And let's all try to understand the limitations of our crafts.

For example, large PB's and commies with gear out CANNOT make quick turns. We must give them PLENTY of room to maneuver.

That is all.

Cheers,

Alex

General Fishing Tips / Caspar / Ft. Bragg area tips and intel?
« on: August 27, 2016, 12:32:36 PM »
What's up, guys?

I'm gonna be camping at Jughandle Farm over Labor Day weekend, and of course I'm bringing my kayak. I havent kayaked that area, so I could use some general intel about suggested launch spots, etc..

It looks like Caspar and Fort Bragg are both just a quick drive from the campground.

If the weather behaves, I'd like to head off shore and troll for a bit then head in and target rockfish.

Where would you go?

Thanks!

Alex

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Question for NRS Chinook users...
« on: August 24, 2016, 09:04:18 AM »
What's up, guys?

Quick question for those of you with the newer (2013+?) version of the NRS Chinook PFD...

Does this loop work well for attaching your VHF radio? I like to keep it out and accessible (not in a pocket).

Of course I'll need to try it out myself, but I thought I'd ask here first.

Cheers,

Alex
