Not sure how I missed this, thanks for the report from Eagle Lake!  Tempted to try it, but worried it's going to be too cold and snowed in now.  Maybe plan a trip for spring

No prob and your thought process is probably spot on...the weather pattern has definitely changed with highs in the 20's and 30's,  a good bit of snow the last few days, and forecasted lows in the teens.

With the unseasonably mild fall weather this year I've been able to get the 'yak in the water off Wildcat Point on the west side of Eagle Lake several times.  The fish are running pretty consistently in the 3 pound class with a few a bit under and a few a bit over.  Yesterday the solunar chart looked great the the forecast was for bluebird weather for this area.  Air temp was 28 degrees when I splashed the boat at 10:30 and probably peaked in the mid 40's during the day.  Surface temp was 45ish degrees.  Got 6 to the boat in a few hours and farmed a couple more.   As of right now, the A1 road from the Susanville side is open but that can be subject to change based on the weather and the County road department's degree of laziness.  The Gallatin ramp is still usable for fishing the south end and with a good 4x4 you don't mind getting muddy access to Wildcat is stlll pretty easy.   We're in a good moon cycle for a bit now and, other than a dusting forecasted for this weekend, not much weather on the horizon....

Vid from my worn out gopro from yesterday....I trimmed my entire 11 minute home movie down to one fight and the rest of the catch  :) :) :) :) :) :)

Nice! But, I don't need to travel to get that kind of "fresh" air...
LOL....before the smoke got TOO thick it did make for one pretty sunset in camp so there was that too  :smt003 :smt003 :smt003 :smt003

Nice video !!! thanks for the report that looks like a cool lake!!
Jeff
Yeah, I need to do lots more figuring on it...got about a dozen of those little planter 'bows in 3 fairly short paddles.  That whole area is neat to kick around in (about as rural as California gets) I just hope that W5 Cold Springs fire that was makin' all that smoke didn't burn too close to it.  The day after we broke camp they evacuated the campground.

Last week on Blue Lake.  There are nice browns in it...some day maybe I'll get to meet one.  Alas, not this trip but, hey, at least I got some of that clean mountain air (he said, facetiously)

I can hear how excited in his voice when landed that trophy size Mack.  Thanks for sharing the video Jcat.

No prob...great memory that I'll share with anyone who will watch   :smt001 :smt001 :smt001

Awesome video and how cool that your son kept his composure fighting a big fish.

Bring him down to Tomales or the SF Bay and we'll get him on a big bat ray.  Arms will be like spaghetti noodles afterwards.   :smt044

He's already gettin' where he outfishes me pretty darn frequently (he got me 3-zip that day in fact).... and, yeah, I imagine battling a 'ray would be good for some fatigue!

I'm playin' catchup with my boy...he got a pretty respectable one last fall and has the family record to this point (although, by default I have he family kayak record at this point...lol)...

LOL...I'll never complain too loudly about a fish that can make a 60 foot run but there are macks in that lake to 4 times that size...they just didn't get that big by being easy prey!

Everything I drove by including Haskins and Sundew were still closed.

Bucks Lake macks fished tough for everyone I talked to today but I persevered through a broken rudder cable, a bit of a sun burn, and a few hours to get one smallish fish to the boat.  It is a new species cross-off for me (in the 'yak at least) and there's way worse things to do than float around talking trash with a buddy.

Tight lines!

2019 treated me well from a fishing standpoint.   The cold water was definitely better to me than the warm but I did sneak in a smalley or two worth catching.  Best of all I got to get out in the fresh air with friends and (most importantly of all) my son, who turned 15 in October just days, it seems, after I held his tiny little 5lb body in my arms for the first time.  Tight lines, all.  Be safe, have fun, and let's keep hitting the water in 2020!

My biggest fishing goal for the coming year:  A MACK IN THE 'YAK!!!

What were you using?  How far back?

Bushy

I missed a couple on Denis Pierce's tube flies (trolllingflies.com) in Tui Chub pattern about a foot behind a Wigglefin action disk.   The rest of the bites I got, including all three I got to the boat, were on little 5cm Berkely Flicker Shad diving crankbaits in "slick sunset" pattern, which is hard to find...black/gold sunset is the next best color in my experience.  At 100 feet behind the boat at roughly 1.2-1.5mph they run about 10 feet down.  I normally follow a depth contour and try to stay in 12 feet of water when I fish them, although the last two fish I picked up were at 1pm and I'd moved out in to 30 feet of water (I rarely fish that late in the day up there).

Tight lines.

Fuzzy Tom, I started fishing Eagle in the mid '80's and the fish were definitely bigger on average and they stayed that way in to the '90's; double digit fish were a real possibility.  As the lake dropped very low a during the last drought the fish got quite small and didn't look near as healthy as they are now.  Water levels have recovered SOME and the fish definitely look better and are getting some size back to them.

Crash, I was just just off Pikes Point, pretty close to the boat ramp.  And yes, I need to bring a different net if I keep taking the 'yak to Eagle; that's actually the first time I have and I got the 'yak in '15.  I usually take the motor boat this time of year so I can bundle up more but yeah...the Indian summer has definitely run long this year.  I agree the bass net just wasn't cutting it yesterday, especially since I'm awkward on my best day!

Took a "me day" and did some "fitness fishing" today.....trolled 6 miles to get 6 bites and only got to see 3 of them so I'd rate the fishing as slow to fair but not bad for mid day on a full moon.....I'm really liking what I'm seeing this year for fish quality.  Nowhere near the hay days of the '80's and '90's but the fish are healthy and spunky nonetheless.  Tight lines!
