If that's the part of the T I think it is you should keep going down the trail for a while. That is if it's been cleared. My successful method is dry and dropper with a stimulator up top and a BH Birdsnest or prince or hares ear. You can't beat the scenery but you pay for those fish with blood and bruises.

I know that tree well. Bass like to bed near there.
The dock near there (Doc Martingly maybe) is a nice place to cast a top water bug.

I generally hit it with my flyrod and love to toss a frog pattern into those bushes by the damn. Caught my biggest bass to date there.

I think the float tube falls outside the rules as it says you can't launch a boat. The patrol has come by many times and I just give them a friendly wave and they leave me alone.

Keep at them.

Thwack,
I too fish PML. I generally focus on the dam area and the tullies on the eastern side. The rock structure holds bass and blue gill. I hit it at dusk for best results. Are you a property owner? The reason I ask is you ability to bring your kayak. They generally have frowned on private non-licensed boats on the lake. For that reason I have been relegated to using my float tube. Just curious how you got away with it.

Damn dude. I am glad you are alright. A hook in the throat would be quite scary.
I might have headed to the nearest bottle of tequila.

That just goes to prove....it isn't just about fishing.
It's about being outdoors. The fish are a bonus!
Nice work.

Yeah, those PB'rs were something. They were up on plane just going to town at max speed. I might....say might....have uttered a few less-than-kind words to one of them. :smt013

It was slow, but nice. The weather cooperated. It was very chilly when I started at 6:30ish. I haven't been to DV in a while and was taken aback by the lack of water in the south end and the overall depth change. I trolled and casted several different lures, including Shad Rap (SR5, SR7), Fire Tiger Rap, XRap Rainbow, Bleeding shad rap, and a bass jig. The rainbow (about the same size as FF's) hit the shad rap SR5.

I was marking fish throughout the lake, but just couldn't get them to give my lures a go. I talked to one PB'er who also kayaks and he had two keeper stripers using anchovies on a slooooooow troll in the early AM.

It was nice meeting all of you. We will get them next time. No pictures from me. The rechargeable batteries in my FF died rather quickly, so I had to cannibalize the batteries from the camera.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Re: Left or right hand retrieve
« on: October 12, 2007, 12:52:27 PM »
This is a hottly debated topic for some.
I say do what is most comfortable. I guess I am one of the wierd ones. I am right handed. I strip line with my left hand. When I get a hookup, I reel with the right hand.

The switch between hands takes virtually no effort. Being right handed, my right hand is more nimble, thus I am more efficient at reeling. My left hand just feels clunky when reeling.

Another positive side....it keeps people from borrowing your stuff.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Re: carmel beach 9/11

I have experienced the jumping rockies. If you look closely you will may see schools of little bait fish cruising (at least that is what I have seen). I have had a blast using a flyrod and a popper. You should put a topwater bait in your box just for that opportunity.

General Talk / Re: Kayak-friendly Hotel in Monterey?

Ok, I just got back. I left the fishing gear at home and focused my wife and our succesful marriage. Bill got me thinking about Marina. I didn't want to go cheap, but we didn't need to stay in Monterey either. We don't do gifts on our anniversary and favor spending the money on a nice place to stay and a nice dinner.

We stayed at the Marina Dunes Resort. It wasn't cheap, but we only stayed one night. The grounds were secure and patrolled according to the kid who checked us in. I locked the kayaks up anyways. The view of the ocean is superb. The rooms are very nice. The beach is a short distance away.  You could get any number of massage/spa treatments if you liked. They do require you to drive golf carts between your room and your car, which is kind of nice as it keeps the noise down, plus you get to try your racing skills out.

We launched at the park on Cannery Row for a morning of Otter watching. My wife is a major otter fan and she was not dissapointed. We saw several otters and several otter pups. Two moms were quite focused on cleaning their pups. It was quite a nice morning of kayaking.

Anyways, it was a wonderful couple of days. Take it from an experienced husband, you just have to know when to leave the fishing gear at home and make your wife smile.  I think I got major WAF points on this trip.  :smt003

Thanks to all for their suggestions.

Thanks to both. I am still amazed 13 years passed by so quickly. I am a lucky guy. She actually likes that I fish. She says it makes me a happy person, so go do it. Can't beat that!

General Talk / Kayak-friendly Hotel in Monterey?

My wife and I are about to celebrate our lucky 13th anniversary :smt008. She chose a couple days in  Monterey and insists we take the kayaks....gotta love her.  :smt007

Does anyone have any recommendations  for kayak-friendly (ie good and safe parking areas) hotels in Monterey?

I just wonder if I could convince her to let me go fishing one day.....

Thanks for any recommendations.

One of the good things was the Seals were in close watching a couple shore anglers. I didn't have one pester me all day.
I wondered where they were until I paddled in and saw 10 of them watching these two guys casting from shore near whatever hole that is.
