Safety First / Tahoe Area Snow Safety
« on: March 02, 2018, 04:39:51 PM »
If any of you are coming up to Tahoe  this weekend please come prepared and be mindful of the weather and road conditions. Be conservative driving, skiing, boarding and yakking. The North Tahoe/Truckee Area Fire Depts have been busy with multiple weather/snow/ice incidents.  Vehicle accidents, Semi trucks, one even off River Rd onto the bike path, buried abandoned vehicles (luckily unoccupied),  Snowboarder death at Squaw, and now we are responding to a small avalanche in Squaw Valley Ski area with multiple buries. This series of storms is not over, avalanche danger will be high. Do not be afraid to wear your Beacon even in the developed Ski Areas.   Be prepared and supplied to be stranded  for awhile (hopefully not)  in your vehicle, or wherever you are staying. If you take medications bring enough/extra in case of delays, stranded or snowed in. Be aware were you stand or walk, we are having trees unload large chunks of snow and broken branches.

If you come to Tahoe informed and prepared, this weekend should be an adventure and Fun. North Tahoe SnowFest  kicks off this weekend with the Annual North Tahoe Firefighters Snowfest Pancake Breakfast at Tahoe City Fire St. 51  followed by the Snowfest  Parade.  Be aware Highway 28 from the Wye in Tahoe City to Grove Street will be closed from 11 amish to noonish.  Be Safe and Have Fun.

General Talk / Diving and perforated sinus
« on: February 06, 2016, 08:45:30 AM »
Had an upper molar extracted a month ago by the Dentist, this resulted in a thru and thru perforation into the sinus (approx.3mm)  :smt012.  Won't go into the gross details  :smt009, but have been on modified duty last 30 days because with this hole in my head I cannot work a fire or wear SCBA.   Perforation did not heal or close up so Dentist referred me Periodontics Specialist couple of days ago. His plan is to surgically repair  perforation  with skin graft/flap from my upper palate. He says no elevation or pressure changes for at least two weeks ie; straws, blowing nose or trip from Reno to Bay area.  He believes 3-4 mos before any Diving.

He has not performed this procedure on someone who Dives or wears an SCBA, so I am reaching out to hopefully find any information or personal experiences (if someone wishes to share) regarding sinus perforation post treatment and Diving or SCBA use. Thanks.

Looks like I will be putting DOTY on hold  :smt010.   But,  pursuing AOTY  :smt003 and actually posting fish  :smt002 .

General Talk / Another Hook removal story
« on: April 04, 2015, 09:47:12 AM »
2015 hrs,On the job, hoping to grab some dinner before next call.  Cell phone rings, it's the wife calling to inform me that my dog Trinity has  fish hooks in her nose. My first reactions was what did I do or not do with my gear????  :smt009 :smt013   My wife goes on to explain that her and a girlfriend are making a memorial fishing flower basket for a friend that passed away and they must have dropped a fishing lure.  OK, my guilt trip passed  :smt012 so time to spring into action.  Asked if the barb(s) are showing through the tissue, Wife replies  NO the points are just sticking thru and they can not hold her.......so off to the emergency room vet. Vet had to IV and put her out to remove the treble hook.  Bad news, $425,  Good news, no complications and she is as prissy and curious as always.  Gotta love our dogs and their antics.

General Talk / Tahoe Snow
« on: February 28, 2015, 07:50:56 AM »
I must be dreaming because heard  strange sounds all night; sounds like grinding of Snow Plows and clanking of tire chains. Could the weather man finally have called it right????  Hell Ya.... it is snowing  :smt044 and chain controls are up. It has been so long since last snow, almost forgot how to chain up a fire engine  :smt005.    Approx 4-6 " at Lake level not much but every little bit helps.  Should have figured it would snow since I'm heading to the coast when off work to hopefully put a couple more DOTY points up.

General Talk / Sad Day for Law and Fire
« on: October 24, 2014, 09:16:05 PM »
Heavy Heart and Sadness to hear about Officer shot. Ran many an interesting call with  PCSO Officer  Jeff Davis when he worked North Tahoe, glad to hear he will survive.  But Grief came to us at North Tahoe Fire when we heard Officer Mike Davis was shot and killed. Mike was a Great Guy and Fireman with us in the early nineties, but his passion and drive was to be a Cop.  He left Kings Beach Fire (as we were known then) to become an Officer with Auburn PD.  .  Here is pic from the Cottonwood Fire Aug 1994 right before he left to become a Cop.  From left to right, Lt. Dillon, Steve Atkins, Myself (Russ) and a young Mike Davis far right    We Salute You Mike Davis,  Rest In Peace Brother.
